Best Summer Destinations for Female Solo Travellers

Deciding where to travel is one of the toughest things about being a solo traveller, and even more so when you are a female. Many things need to be taken into consideration. Is it safe? Are there areas I need to avoid? These are questions we all ask ourselves when determining the best Summer destination as a solo traveller.

Well fret no more. Some well-travelled, experienced, solo female travellers, have provided their recommendations for the best summer destinations for any woman wanting to travel alone.

Alaska, USA

The long sunny days of summer make Alaska the perfect destination for the solo traveller who loves nature, adventures, and friendly people.

During the summer months (May to September), you will be blessed with daylight from 19 to 22 hours a day, providing an ample amount of time to experience this unique state. Even throughout the summer months, the evening temperatures in Alaska can get quite cool, so make sure that you are dressed for the fluctuating temperatures.

For those who want to escape the tourist traps, I recommend heading inland to the interior where activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, boating, glacier peeping, and searching for wildlife will fill your day.

If you are new to solo travel and find the thought of exploring Alaska on your own daunting but you still want to experience its beauty, I highly recommend taking a cruise through the Inside Passage. Cruising won’t allow you to experience the uniqueness of the Alaskan people, but you can’t help but to get lost in all of Alaska’s beauty.

Canyonlands, USA

Located just outside of Moab, Canyonlands National Park is a stunning park known for the awe-inspiring red rock formations within the Island in the Sky and the Needles Districts. It’s also one of the best summer destinations for solo female travelers since it’s a safe place to travel to, where the solitude of nature is best enjoyed alone. 

However, because summers in Canyonland is a popular time to visit, you’ll want to get up well before sunset to beat the crowds and the intense mid-day heat. Daily highs can regularly exceed 100 F and many of the trails here don’t offer shade; therefore, always wear a sun hat, sunglasses, pack plenty of sunscreen, stay hydrated and always carry a hydration pack or a refillable water bottle with you.

Enjoy views from ten epic viewpoints along the Island in the Sky Scenic Drive before hiking to Mesa Arch, Grand View Point, and White Rim Overlook. Next, head to the Needles District and try Cave Spring, Pothole Point, Slickrock Foot Trail. 

You can also enjoy a bit of stargazing in the evening and admire the beauty of the Milky Way before heading back to your room at Purple Sage in Moab and grabbing some seafood/steak at Broken Oar Restaurant.

Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Charleston is a great summer destination for female solo travelers. It is such a vibrant city and is so beautiful. The downtown area is very walkable and there are so many great things to do there. Be sure to check out the colorful houses on Rainbow Street.

One of the best things to do in Charleston is to go on a food tour. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and try some delicious southern food. If you’re looking for another charming southern activity, you can do a tour at the Charleston Tea Garden. It is a fascinating and very fun tour. Another fun thing to do is to visit Fort Sumter. The ferry ride through the harbor is very nice and there is great history there. Along the way out to the island, keep an eye out for dolphins and other wildlife.

Downtown Charleston is the best neighborhood to book a hotel. It is near most of the attractions downtown and has lots of great hotel options to choose from like the Dewberry, Hotel Bennett, and Hyatt Place Charleston.

Croatia

Croatia is definitely one of the most recommended summer destinations for female solo travelers. This beautiful Balkan country not only welcomes you as a solo traveler with a huge portion of hospitality, it is also the gorgeous landscapes and the countless fantastic beaches that make Croatia so unique.

Here you will definitely feel safe right away, because the people in this country are very warm, hospitable and, come what may, always ready to help. Especially if you are traveling alone, they are concerned about your well-being.

Moreover, boredom is guaranteed not to arise in this tourist destination. There are beautiful old towns like Rovinj, Pula, Zadar and Dubrovnik to explore, shopping at the local markets or wanting to treat yourself to a cocktail in one of the many nice bars – everything is absolutely safe and no problem for women traveling alone. You don’t need to be afraid of scams or pickpocketing, because that happens very rarely in Croatia!

If you are looking for good restaurants and wines, you should visit the Istrian peninsula. This region is famous for its culinary highlights, there are truffles and lots of delicacies to taste.

In my opinion, Croatia is already an almost perfect destination for women traveling alone. The people here are wonderful, the coast and beaches are unique and crime is hardly noticeable.

Delhi, India

Delhi is a massive metropolitan area located in northern India, and it’s a great destination for the solo female traveler! You’ll want to spend at least two action-packed days in Delhi, considering it’s home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is an important commercial, political and cultural hub.

Delhi is loosely divided into two areas – New Delhi and Old Delhi, each of which encapsulates its own charm and interesting history.

Old Delhi is a historic city with narrow streets and is best explored by Rickshaw. This area offers an authentic experience and is home to Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, and the Red Fort.

In contrast, New Delhi, which is the capital of India, has wide avenues and a more modern, European flair. Top sites here include the Akshardham Temple, Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb.

Some important things to keep in mind before traveling to Delhi, especially as a solo female traveler are:

• You need an Indian travel visa (e-Visa).
• You must cover your shoulders (and sometimes head) inside temples.
• You may have to use a squat latrine; this can be surprising if you’ve never seen one before. Also, be sure to bring tissues and hand sanitizer just in case.
• Decline taking pictures with people; if you say “yes” to one person, you may get swarmed by other people asking to take pictures with you too.
• Many flights arrive in the middle of the night; to be on the safe side, book a driver in advance. 

French Riviera

Who doesn’t want to spend their summer holiday visiting a gorgeous beach?  The French Riviera is filled with amazing beaches bordering the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. 

Stay in Nice as your home base and you’ll have plenty of fantastic activities to choose from to fill your days.  It’s also easy to travel by train up and down the coast taking day trips to nearby towns.

Stroll along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, Nice’s iconic pedestrian boulevard stretching nearly four miles along the Mediterranean coast.  Spend an afternoon visiting one of Nice’s museums, including ones dedicated to the works of Matisse and Chagall.  Be sure to browse the Marché Aux Fleurs, a bustling outdoor market.  Here you’ll find a vibrant array of flowers as well as fresh produce and prepared foods.   Be sure to get there early for the best selection!

Insider Tip: A visit to the market is an inexpensive way to dine when traveling, and it provides a delicious insight into local cuisine.   Try Nice’s favorite street food, socca.  It’s made of chickpea flour, baked on enormous pans, then sliced into strips –perfect for snacking!

Galway, Ireland

A wonderful summer destination, especially for solo travelers, is the delightful city of Galway, Ireland. The city is like Dublin’s younger sister, located on Ireland’s western coast. The ocean provides a pleasant breeze and mild weather throughout most of the year.  There are plenty of things to do in Galway.

The city’s personality can be found just by walking the streets. Be sure to visit the Latin Quarter and Quay Street for local shops and restaurants. Live music can be found in the pubs and even on the street corners.

The history of the city is intertwined with the modern city. Galway Cathedral, the Spanish Arch, and Lynch’s Castle are in the heart of the city and offer a peek into the history of the city. For a great view of the city and water, head down the Long Walk. Colorful houses line the water and in summer, ducks and swans dot the water. 

The Residence Hotel is a great place to stay with a traditionally-Irish atmosphere and live music nightly at their in-house bar! 

Galway’s walkable cobblestone streets, friendly personality, and charming accommodations make it a great summer destination for solo travelers! 

Lake Tahoe, California, USA

The stunning, alpine lake known as Lake Tahoe is nestled between the stunning peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, near the border between California and Nevada. It is one of the best summer destinations for female solo travelers since it’s an incredibly safe place with lots of outdoor adventures for solo travelers to try. 

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Lake Tahoe this summer, start by hiking through this incredible area. Check the weather first and pack plenty of water/sunscreen as you enjoy the Emerald Bay hike, the Eagle Falls Hike, the hike to Marlette Lake, and more. These treks are not to be missed since they provide visitors with some of the best bird’s eye views of the lake. Emerald Bay and Cave Rock both provide the best sunsets in the area.

To cool off after your hike, rent SUPs, kayaks, jet skis, or motor boats and marvel at this giant lake from the water. It is best to get on the lake in the morning since afternoons get windy and the water can become rough. 

When your adventures are done, grab a beer at Coldwater Brewery and Grill or some tapas at Bites American Tapas before spending the night at Mellow Mountain Hostel. Not only are accommodations well-priced and clean, but they have a communal lounge with a fireplace and games where you can easily meet other like-minded travelers.

Lost Coast, California, USA

It’s a pretty well-known fact that the entire coast of California is absolutely stunning lined with the rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and everything from palm trees to redwoods. But while most of the coast is pretty popular and has been well explored, did you know that there’s a  part of the coast that has remained undeveloped? The Lost Coast is a 75 mile stretch of coastline that is a bumpy drive off the main highway, and so it’s a gorgeous remote destination that many travelers miss. 

Because it’s located in Northern California, the Lost Coast has pretty moody weather with rain for much of the year – this means that summer is an amazing time to explore, because the sun is out and the temperatures are warm! The best place to check out on the Lost Coast is the black sand beach near the town of Shelter Cove. While you’re here, make sure to stop at Arts at Heart, which is a collective of local artists who display everything from paintings to woodwork to handmade clothing. The shop is located on a cliff over the beach so you also get a great view!

Lucca, Italy

Lucca, Italy is one of the best summer destinations for female solo travelers. One of the first things the check-in person told me at the Grand Universe Lucca Hotel was that Lucca is very safe. 

Indeed, I felt that way too as I explored this charming fortified city. Especially walking atop the fortification wall where locals stroll their babies or take a morning run. Lucca has many towers and churches, so the views from the wall are very picturesque. It’s a great way to see the sights and one of the best things to do in Lucca.

Take time to stroll through the quaint streets and large squares like Piazza Napoleone, San Giusto Square, Piazza San Michele, and Piazza Anfiteatro. The Piazza dell’Anfiteatro holds the shape of the amphitheater that once stood in its place with ruin remnants hidden throughout. Great restaurants in Lucca are plentiful with excellent versions of the traditional Italian dishes unique to this region, like Bistecca alla Fiorentina (the thickest steak ever), panzanella (tomato and bread salad), and tordelli (similar to large ravioli). Every restaurant hand-makes its own tordelli and if you eat nothing else, there’s no shame in that.

Malaga, Spain

One of the safest destinations for female solo travellers in Spain is Malaga. This coastal city is a great place to explore without the concerns of keeping a constant eye on your belongings or surroundings as happens in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

If you are planning to visit Malaga, stay in the city centre to make the most of your time. You can find affordable accommodation and be a few minutes’ walk from most attractions. The TOC Hostel Malaga is a great choice for solo female travellers.

During your time in Malaga, check out La Alcazaba, a beautiful Moorish fortress-palace, and have lunch at El Pimpi, one of the most popular restaurants in the city, to try some authentic traditional food.

If you’re travelling on a budget, you will be happy to hear that there are plenty of free things to do in Malaga. and some paid attractions are free on Sundays afternoon.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

While there are many incredible destinations perfect for female solo travellers, Canada is one of the safest places to visit. And without a doubt, the best time to visit Canada is in the summer!

So if you’re planning to travel this summer and you want to visit a historic city in Canada, you have to check out Montreal, Quebec. Sitting on the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal was founded in 1642 (225 years before Canada became a country!). Today, you can admire some of Montreal’s history at the Notre-Dame Basilica and the Old Port of Montreal. But there are many other things to do in Montreal in the summer as well, from having a picnic on top of Mont Royal, wandering around Old Montreal, admiring the scenery at the Botanical Garden, or taking a self-guided walking tour of Montreal.

But remember, while Montreal is generally a safe city, take normal safety precautions! Stay on the busy streets at night, don’t accept drinks from strangers, and don’t flash wads of cash. As long as you’re taking normal precautions, you should have a fabulous and safe time in Montreal.

Okinawa, Japan

With world-class beaches, a unique history and culture, and fantastic cuisine, Okinawa is a great summer destination, especially for women wanting to travel alone.

The island of Okinawa is actually part of a group of over 150 islands between Japan and Taiwan, with Okinawa being the biggest island.

The culture of Okinawa has been shaped by the indigenous community that lives there, Japanese annexation in the late 19th century, the bloody battles of World War II, and the United States military presence that continues to this day.

Getting around Okinawa by rental car is very convenient, but you can also get around by bus. If you choose to get around by bus, consider staying a few days in Naha, the largest city. It has an international airport, ferry terminal, a monorail, buses which provides access all around the island, and plenty of restaurants, shops, and hotels.

Aside from the beautiful beaches, one of the best activities to do on Okinawa is visiting the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. This terrific aquarium is one of only a few aquariums in the world to house whale sharks.

The aquarium also sits in the Ocean Expo Park, which offers additional activities like gardens, a recreation of a traditional Okinawa village, and the Oceanic Culture Museum and Planetarium.

Oregon Coast, USA

Want to connect with nature? You’ll have plenty of stunning options- from the dramatic sea stacks found in the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor to the hiking trails winding through coastal forests in some of Oregon’s best state parks, like Oswald West or Ecola State Park. Feeling, instead, like exploring some charming cities? There are so many quaint Oregon Coast towns, each with their own quirky vibe.

Stop by the town of Florence, towards the southern end, for the cutest Old Town district, full of candy-colored stores, or the iconic Cannon Beach towards the north, with art galleries and ice cream shops housed in adorable beach shacks.

The Oregon Coast is safe and full of friendly locals– and regardless of whether you’re looking for rustic accommodations or a straight up bougie spa, you’ll be able to find lodging that fits exactly the vibe you’re going for. Whatever you do, though, make sure you make a campfire on one of the gorgeous beaches. Porto, Portugal

Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, is an incredibly safe city for solo female travellers. This city is famous for its association with port wine. The old Historic Centre of Porto, alongside the nearby Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar, are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From boat trips on the Douro River to discovering hidden architectural gems, there are plenty of places to visit in Porto.

Rumoured to be the inspiration behind the Harry Potter books, Livraria Lello is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world and one of the must-visit attractions in Porto. Next, climb the Clerigos Tower for a stunning view over the city skyline. No visit to Porto is complete without taking a tour of its famous port wine cellars. You will find many of them in Gaia, on the other side of the Douro River.

Visit the Sao Bento Railway Station to find beautiful artworks on ceramic tiles, known as azulejos. Finally, head down to Matosinhos beach and Foz do Douro promenade for a day out by the beach. Don’t miss a visit to the famous Majestic Cafe. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cafes in the world.

Positano, Italy

Positano is the ideal location for seeing all the Amalfi Coast has to offer.  Just a 37-mile ride from Naples Italy, you can quickly get to your destination.  Positano is known for being a “vertical town” with pastel-colored homes built into a Tyrrhenian Sea cliff. Here you will find some of the best Amalfi Coast boutique hotels, beaches, shopping, restaurants and more. Keep in mind, it is called the “vertical town” for a reason – lots of steps!

Stay in the heart of the city at Hotel Palazzo Murat. This elegant 18th-century building is surrounded by stunning panoramic views.  Enjoy their complimentary breakfast on the rooftop patio and eat under the aromatic fruit trees.

A trip to Positano would not be complete without taking a boat tour. See a neighboring village by boat, or journey slightly further to the unforgettable island of Capri. 

While Positano is an upscale village, safety is still a consideration.  In highly trafficked areas such as trains, it is best to anticipate pickpockets.  Keep your belongings close to you. Large bags that could provide easy access to an intruder should ideally have a luggage lock on them.  This will curtail being an easy target.

Ill Trident in Positano offers amazing meals with an incredible view from the rooftop of Hotel Poseidon. They specialize in local cuisine, Mediterranean seafood, and pasta dishes.  Additionally, there is also a good variety of vegetarian and gluten free menu options.

 

Quito, Ecuador

For solo female travelers looking to connect with other travelers, Quito, Ecuador is one of the best summer destinations you can choose. A hub for backpackers and travelers throughout Latin America, in Quito you’ll be able to find plenty of opportunities to connect. Make sure to check out The Secret Garden Hostel in Quito if you’re looking for connection and future travel buddies; this social hostel always has activities, happy hours, and walking tours of the city which can make it the perfect place to meet others.

Quito is both an incredible city to explore, and a great base for travel throughout Ecuador. There are plenty of easy day trips from Quito that will keep you busy for awhile, including easy access to the Amazon Rainforest, Ecuador’s impressive Cloud Forest, and countless opportunities for hiking and mountain climbing throughout the Andes Mountains. Once you’ve visited these impressive regions of the country, head to the coast for some of Latin America’s best beaches, including beach towns like Canoa, Mompiche, and Ayampe.

Rincon, Puerto Rico

On the northwestern coast of Puerto Rico, the exciting town of Rincón is the ultimate summer destination for solo female travelers. Known for its great surfing scene, incredible taco stands, quaint shopping district, and hospitable bed and breakfasts, women of all ages can soak up some sun on this less-frequented side of the popular Caribbean island. 

To get Rincon, fly into the small airport of Aguadilla then travel by rental car just 30 minutes south until you hit the stunning beaches of Rincón. When it’s time for some lunch, stop by Jack’s Shack for some fresh fish tacos along Rt. 4413 at kilometer 0.5!  Perfect for on-the-go travelers or anyone looking for some of the best local food in town. Just be sure to brush up on your Spanish before you get to Rincón, as many of the locals don’t speak English like they do in the capital of San Juan! 

Rincón is an incredibly safe town in Puerto Rico, and solo female travelers can feel good about visiting this side of the island on their own. To feel extra secure in your decision, it’s recommended to book a private room in a reputable bed and breakfast versus a shared room elsewhere.

San Francisco, California, USA

The largest city in Northern California, San Francisco is one of the best Summer destinations in the United States for solo travelers.

San Francisco is a city with a great food scene, plenty of culture and interesting history. It’s also one if the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the United States, which means you don’t need a car to see some of the most famous landmarks in San Francisco like the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf or Pier 39. The most popular mode of transportation in San Francisco is bicycle and you can rent one in many bike shops to make your way around the Bay Area. 

If you want to take one of the most popular day trips from San Francisco to the vineyards of Napa Valley or Sonoma County; or explore Yosemite National Park, you can take a guided tour that departs daily.

San Francisco never gets too warm with the average temperature hovering just around mid 60-s during the summer months. The fog and breeze from the Bay Area can make it very chilly especially in the morning and at night, so make sure you pack more than just shorts and t-shirts. I recommend packing layers such as jackets, sweaters and long-sleeve shirts. 

South Walton, Florida, USA

The hidden gem of South Walton (also known as 30A) is located on the Northwest Coast of Florida, along the Panhandle. 

It is a popular beach destination amongst Americans but unknown to international travellers, making it a great vacation for solo travellers looking for an upscale coastal trip. 

The most unique aspect of South Walton, is that it’s 26 miles of coastline, are made up of 16 beachside neighbourhoods, all with different personalities. This makes it easy to find something for everyone, from modern art lovers to architecture buffs and fans of watersports.

The perfect day in South Walton would include checkin into the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, which offers luxury condos, hotel rooms and villas depending on your budget (just make sure you get a unit with a golf cart included so you can explore the area safely and on your own). 

Then rent a paddle board or a kayak and head over to the coastal dune lake at Grayton Beach, a unique geographical feature only found in a handful of places around the world.

After this, visit Hotel Effie for a sunset cocktail at the rooftop bar followed by dinner at the Ovide restaurant downstairs. 

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is a great destination for female solo travellers and there is no better time to visit than in the summer.

It’s a city where solo travelers can feel safe and comfortable, particularly if staying in the center or inner city. Riding public transport is also safe, and the best way to get around. Make sure you take a ferry ride to Manly. Be sure to book a free Sydney Greeter tour at the start of your visit, these give you a chance to meet a local who will give you their best tips for enjoying Sydney.

December to February offers long days and perfect weather to enjoy the outdoors. Hiking the famous 80km Bondi to Manly walk is a great way to explore the city, taking in some of the best beaches, harbour tracks and waterfront suburbs. Most people complete the walk over 3-5 days staying at a base in the city. For a shorter walk, look at the 11km Foreshore walk along the south side of the harbour. If hiking is not your thing, the summer is festival season in the city with the NYE Parties and Festival of Sydney, which runs for most of January offering lots of free outdoor concerts. This list of free things to do in Sydney is a great place to start planning your itinerary.

When hunger strikes, Darling Quarter and Barangaroo have a huge range of options and are great spots for people watching while you eat. Head to Newtown for cheap eats.

If you are travelling on a budget, the Sydney Harbour YHA is hard to beat with its rooftop views over the city’s icons. For something a little more upmarket, The Little National Hotel is a brilliant choice, with small but perfectly equipped rooms and large comfortable and well equipped communal areas giving you a chance to meet other travellers.

Temecula, California

If you’re looking for a warm, sunny, and laid-back place for a solo summer vacation, look no further than Temecula, California, located one hour northeast of San Diego.  Temecula is known as Southern California’s Wine Country, making one of the best things to do in Temecula wine tasting at the dozens of local wineries, like Wilson Creek Winery and Leoness Cellars. You can go on a self-guided wine tour or join a guided tour that includes transportation to several wineries with a group to make friends with other travelers during your vacation.

When you’re not wine tasting, spend some time dining, shopping, and exploring Old Town Temecula. You can make reservations or grab a seat at the bar at some of the hottest restaurants in town, 1909 Temecula, The Goat & Vine, or Public House, or enjoy a coffee at local cafes, like Le Coffee Shop. 

During the day, you can pop into the local boutiques, and at night, you can try line dancing at Temecula Stampede—the West Coast’s largest country-western venue.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

As a female solo traveller, safety is most likely the priority when choosing a destination. Thankfully, there are many safe, clean, and fun cities in our world that women can travel to with ease of mind! 

One of those cities is Toronto. 

Being the largest city in Canada, Toronto is definitely a must-see for any travel lover. It is full of places to see and things to do, namely the CN tower, Canada’s Wonderland, Casa Loma, pristine white-sand beaches, and the list goes on. 

Not only that, but this Canadian city definitely lives up to its stereotype of being “too nice”, as the locals are very welcoming and kind!

Toronto is known for its business-oriented inhabitants and so you can expect a lot of skyscrapers downtown (think Chicago or NYC), as well as numerous high-end stores, businesses, and shopping centres. For a great dinner in elegant surroundings, I suggest stopping by the RH Courtyard Restaurant inside the Yorkdale mall. It’s simply divine!
