Moorea, often called the “sister island” of Tahiti, is a lush and mountainous destination that exudes a laid-back vibe. This island has a more local, authentic feel than some of the other touristy spots in Tahiti, which allows visitors to immerse themselves in Polynesian culture. Hiking and adventurous activities are popular here, including climbing up to the Belvedere lookout, swimming with sharks and rays in their natural habitat, or exploring the island’s waterfalls and gardens.

Between Moorea and Bora Bora, the water in Bora Bora is much clearer and bluer than in Moorea. Which island paradise is right for you?

In contrast, Bora Bora is all about luxury and indulgence. It’s a honeymooner’s paradise, boasting romantic overwater bungalows, impeccable service, and some of the best resorts in the world. With its famous lagoon, Bora Bora is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, where you can see manta rays, sharks, and vibrant coral reefs.

About Bora Bora

Bora Bora is a small island nestled in the South Pacific region of French Polynesia. Known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear lagoon and luxurious resorts, Bora Bora continues to capture the hearts of tourists from all over the world. Its turquoise lagoon is home to a variety of marine life such as turtles, sharks and colorful fishes, making it one of the best destinations for diving and snorkeling.

The paradise island of Bora Bora is known for its luxurious over water bungalows, while Moores is better know for its laid back atmosphere

The island is also renowned for its overwater bungalows, offering visitors the unique experience of staying above the lagoon while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding beauty. Bora Bora has an abundance of activities for visitors to engage in such as island tours, sunset cruises, jet skiing, and parasailing.

About Moorea

Moorea is also a beautiful island located just a short ferry ride from the island of Tahiti. It is known for its lush green mountains, stunning waterfalls and pristine beaches. Visitors to Moorea will enjoy the island’s laid-back atmosphere, cultural and traditional dance performances, and delicious Polynesian cuisine.

Unlike Bora Bora, Moorea has a lush, rugged coast and is the perfect island in paradise for adventure seeking vacationers

Moorea is also a great destination for water sports enthusiasts with various activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the island’s pineapple plantations and hiking through its lush rainforest to discover hidden waterfalls.

Is Moorea or Bora Bora easier to get to from Tahiti

Both Moorea and Bora Bora are accessible by a short flight or ferry ride from Tahiti, but Moorea is typically easier to get to. The ferry ride from Tahiti to Moorea only takes about 30 minutes, while the flight to Bora Bora can take upwards of an hour. However, if you’re willing to splurge on a private transfer or helicopter ride, the travel time to Bora Bora can be significantly reduced.

Ultimately, the decision between Moorea and Bora Bora comes down to your preferences for activities, accommodations, and overall vibe. Both islands offer a slice of paradise in French Polynesia, so you really can’t go wrong with either choice.

MY WINNER with respect to the ease of travel was definitely Moorea! Catch the ferry after landing in Tahiti, and you are a short 45 minute boat ride from paradise.

Which Island Has Better Resorts Moorea or Bora Bora

Both Moorea and Bora Bora have an array of luxury resorts to choose from, so it ultimately depends on what you’re looking for. Each island has its own unique style and vibe when it comes to accommodations.

Moorea Resorts

Moorea’s resorts tend to have a more laid-back, rustic feel, with plenty of lush vegetation and natural surroundings. Some popular options include the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa, the Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort, and the InterContinental Moorea Resort and Spa.

Bora Bora Resorts

On the other hand, Bora Bora’s resorts are known for their over-the-water bungalows and stunning lagoon views. If you’re looking for a more secluded, romantic getaway, Bora Bora might be the better choice. Some top-notch options include The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, Le Bora Bora By Pearl Resorts, and the Conrad Bora Bora Nui.

Ultimately, whether you prefer Moorea’s rustic charm or Bora Bora’s luxurious overwater bungalows, you’re sure to find the perfect resort to suit your taste on either of these beautiful islands.

MY WINNER: Choosing between which resort I prefer between Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea and Le Bora Bora By Pearl Resort is difficult. They are two completely different style resorts with opposite vibes. Sofitel in Moorea was much more cozy and laid back, while Pearl in Bora Bora was very upscale and relaxing. I loved them both and it would have to come to a toss up in order for me to choose.

Is There More To Do In Moorea or Bora Bora?

Both islands offer plenty of activities and experiences for visitors.

Moorea is known for its outdoor adventure opportunities, including hiking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Visitors can explore the island’s lush landscape, stunning waterfalls, and colorful coral reefs.

Bora Bora is more geared towards relaxation and luxury, with opportunities for spa treatments, sunset cruises, and fine dining. Visitors can also take part in water activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and jet skiing.

Personal Preferences

Overall, whether you prefer a more active or laid-back vacation, both Moorea and Bora Bora offer plenty of options to keep you entertained. So, which paradise island is best for you? It all depends on your personal preferences and what you want out of your vacation. Whether you choose Moorea or Bora Bora, one thing is for sure: you won’t be disappointed.

MY WINNER: Again, it’s a tough choice, however, I love adventure and even though I had a blast jetskiing in Bora Bora, I have to say that Moorea has much more to offer the adventure seeker.

Does Moorea or Bora Bora Have Better Food

Both islands offer a range of dining options, from casual cafes to elegant restaurants.

Moorea is known for its authentic Polynesian cuisine, with dishes such as poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk) and taro root dishes.

Bora Bora, on the other hand, offers a mix of local and international cuisine, with a focus on seafood and French-inspired dishes.

The food scene on each island is unique and delicious in its own way. Visitors are sure to find plenty of satisfying meals on either Moorea or Bora Bora.

MY WINNER: I have to vote for both Moorea and Bora Bora. I preferred the breakfast buffet in Moorea, but I thoroughly enjoyed the lunch and dinners in Bora Bora.

Shopping in Bora Bora v Moorea

Let’s face it, not many of us travel to French Polynesia for the shopping, however, for travellers wishing to indulge in some retail therapy, this is my comparison.

When it comes to shopping, Bora Bora has a slight advantage over Moorea. The island is home to several high-end pearl shops, offering some of the most exquisite pearls in the world. Visitors can also shop for local handicrafts and souvenirs at the open-air markets found throughout the island.

Neither Bora Bora or Moorea are known for their retail therapy, however, if you're in search of black pearls, Bora Bora has more options
Shopping in Moorea

On the other hand, Moorea has a more laid-back shopping scene, with a few gift shops and markets selling handicrafts and pearls. However, if you’re looking for a wider variety of shopping experiences, Bora Bora may be the better choice.

MY WINNER: I’ll be completely honest. I wasn’t the least bit interested in shopping, however, I did purchase a hand painted dress in Moorea.

Just One Tip: If you’re shopping for black pearls, I recommend the duty free shop at the Tahiti airport. The sales people were very patient, helpful and friendly.

Is Bora Bora or Moorea Cheaper to Visit

When it comes to cost, both Moorea and Bora Bora are relatively expensive due to their remote location and high-end resorts. However, Moorea can be slightly cheaper than Bora Bora in terms of accommodations and activities.

Moorea and Bora Bora Are Both Expensive!

Visitors can find budget-friendly options such as guesthouses and vacation rentals on Moorea, while Bora Bora is known for its luxurious and exclusive resorts.

Ultimately, the cost of your trip will depend on your itinerary, accommodation choices, dining preferences, and activities.

Regardless of which island you choose, be prepared to splurge for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in paradise.

MY WINNER: Both are expensive, however, I found Moorea to be a little bit cheaper. If you are only planning on visiting one island, and expense is a bit of a concern, I recommend Moorea over Bora Bora.
