It has several, depending on how you like to travel. In all honesty, they are all great areas to stay in Barcelona, you can’t go wrong.

You can choose to stay at a hotel on a historic street with lively nightlife, or a quieter area that has a more local feeling. In this post I provide my personal breakdown of the best areas to stay when visiting Barcelona, who each area is best for, as well as some personal recommendations based on budget.

You’re within walking distance of Las Ramblas, the waterfront, and countless cafés and tapas bars. The trade-off? It can be noisy at night, especially near busy streets. I’d stay here again, but I’d choose a spot tucked just off the main tourist routes.

If I had to pick just one neighborhood, El Born would be it. It has the charm of the old city but feels more creative and stylish. I loved the mix of boutique shops, wine bars, and small plazas where locals actually hang out.

I especially loved the vibrant energy, beautiful street, and the amazing dining options that can be found in the El Born area of Barcelona.

El Born is also close to Parc de la Ciutadella, which was one of my favorite places to relax after a full day of sightseeing. It feels lively without being overwhelming, and everything is walkable.

This area of Barcelona is the perfect option for couples, solo travellers, and foodies.

Eixample: Best For Comfort, Space, And Easy Transportation

If you opt to stay in Eixample, it will feel like a breath of fresh air after the wandering the streets of the old city. The wide boulevards, beautiful architecture, and calmer vibe makes this part of Barcelona a more comfortable area to stay.

With multiple bus lines intersecting, this area is perfect if you need reliable transportation to get around the city. You will be close to major sights like Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló. The accommodations also tend to be larger, which is a big plus if you’re travelling for more than a few nights.

The Eixample neighborhood is the best area to stay in Barcelona if you are staying longer, or travelling as a family and need more space.

Gracia: Best Area To Stay In Barcelona For A Local, Laid-Back Experience

Gracia feels like its own little village within Barcelona. It’s less touristy, more relaxed and full of cozy areas to hang out in.

This is a great area to stay if you want to experience Barcelona beyond the main attractions, but still be close to the city bus routes. Dining is more affordable, and the vibe is more chill.

If you’re a repeat visitor, slow traveller, or a digital nomad, then the Gracia area is the one of the best areas to stay in Barcelona.

Just One Tip: If you’re staying in the Gracia area, I recommend eating at El Glop for an authentic meal, with friendly service, at a reasonable price. It’s known as one of the best restaurants in the Catalonia Region among the locals.

Barceloneta: Best Area To Stay In Barcelona For Beach Lovers

If you love to wake up to the sound of the sea, then staying in Barceloneta will be the perfect fit. Walking to the beach every morning and catching the sunset along the promenade will be a highlight of your stay.

Having said that, this part of Barcelona is very lively and busy, especially in the summer. I only recommend staying in this area of Barcelona if the beach is a priority and you don’t mind crowds.
