The Ultimate Cruise Packing List: Essentials For Smooth Sailing

So, you’ve booked a cruise and you’re doing the happy dance! Now comes the part that isn’t quite as fun… packing. The good news? I’ve put together the ultimate cruise packing list to save you from overstuffed luggage and those “oops, I forgot it” moments.

If you’re anything like me, you’re staring at your suitcase wondering if you really need five pairs of sandals (spoiler: you don’t). Packing for a cruise can be a little tricky because you’re not just hanging out poolside (although that’s the best part). You’ve also got fancy dinners, casual days on deck, and adventures waiting at every port.

Packing for a cruise can be a bit more than a little overwelming. Especially if it’s your first cruise. Choosing the right cruiseline and itinerary can be complicated. But packing for a cruise doesn’t have to be complicated – especially if it’s a Caribbean cruise, which is what I’ll cover in this post. If you’re packing for a European cruise, basically the same items will be required. However, if you’re packing for an Alaskan cruise, that will take a bit more thought. But hey, that’s covered in another post.

When packing for a Caribbean cruise, less is better. It’s actually possible to bring just a carry-on when only on a one week cruise. I’ve got it down “packed”, as I find it much easier to travel with just one suitcase and my personal item. Let’s take a look at the items needed for a perfect cruise experience.

What To Pack In A Cruise Carry-On

If you are only bringing a carry-on, then obviously everything will be packed in it. But if you are bringing an additional suitcase, you will need to have a few items packed into your carry-on so that you can access them as soon as you board the ship.

It’s important that the following items be packed in your cruise carry-on:

  • boarding pass
  • passport
  • medication
  • phone charger
  • swimsuit, sunscreen, hat, beach cover-up, and sandals
  • change of clothes.

These are just the essential items to pack in your carry-on, but you can read carry-on essentials in more detail here.

Toiletries And Personal Items

packing toiletries and personal items needed for a cruise vacation

Although the majority of cruiselines provide shampoo, conditioner, soap, and moisturizing cream, you may want to bring your own (I don’t as it takes up a lot of room in the suitcase).

In addition to the basic essentials, there are other personal and toiletries that you may want to pack when going on a cruise:

  • sunscreen
  • after sun cream or aloe vera
  • seasickness remedies, such as writsbands or tablets
  • basic medications
  • insect repellent (especially for tropical destinations)
  • feminine products

If you forget any of these items, there’s no need to panic. They can be purchased on the ship, BUT, they are very expensive.

Packing For A Cruise – Essentials

In addition to what you have packed in your carry-on, there are a few other cruise essentials that I recommend. These items aren’t necessarily required, but they will come in handy throughout your cruise.

  • lanyard for your cruise card
  • day bag or backpack for your excursions
  • refillable water bottle
  • waterproof phone case for beach days (especially if you’re cruising solo)
  • power strip and portable phone charger
  • small first aid kit, which includes bandaids and pain relievers

Just One Tip: When I cruise, I use a backpack as my personal item. That way I have it for shore excursions and it saves space in my suitcase

Clothing And Accessories

Now for the important stuff. These are the items that you won’t want to leave home without, but remember, less is more:

  • casual wear, including shorts, tank tops, sundress. My rule of thumb is to take an outfit for each “port” day. Sundresses take up less room in the suitcase
  • swimsuit. During the days at sea, you will be living in a swimsuit. I recommend packing at least 2 and possibly 3
  • coverup for walking around the ship and eating in the buffet
  • evening attire. Although some cruiselines are doing away with formal night, many still include at least 1 formal night during a 1 week cruise. These nights aren’t near as formal as the once were and a cocktail dress or a nice pair of slacks and glittery top are sufficient. NOTE: It’s not mandatory to attend formal night, although you might feel a bit out of place dining in the dining room. I recommend eating at the buffet if you choose not to participate in formal night.
  • lightweight sweater or jacket. Even in the Caribbean, the evenings can get chilly, so packing a sweater is a great idea
  • comfortable shoes. This is where I run into difficulties as I’ve got quite a shoe fetish. Realistically, you need maximum 3 pairs of shoes: runners, casual sandals, and dressier sandals if you plan on participating in formal night
  • hat and sunglasses for sun protection

Just One Cruise Packing Tip: lay out all of the clothes you think you’ll need – then put away half of them and pack

Fun And Extras You Will Want To Pack For A Cruise

If you don’t have room in your suitcase, it’s okay to leave these items behind. But they are handy to have.
