For those of you who are thinking about embarking on your first solo adventure, cruising is the perfect place to start. In this article, we will take a look at why a cruise is perfect for solo travellers, the benefits of cruising alone, and the best cruise lines for your first solo cruise.

Disclosure: I personally love cruising! I believe it’s the safest way to begin your adventure into the world of solo travel.

Growing Popularity Of Cruising Solo

According to a recent study, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of cruising solo. In fact, the number of travellers who embark on solo cruises has grown by more than 20% in the past few years. Many cruise lines have recognized this trend and have created cabins specifically designed for solo travelers. These cabins typically come in a variety of sizes and price points, ensuring that there is an option available for every type of traveller. Additionally, cruise lines are offering more activities and social events geared towards solo travellers, making it an even more attractive option for those looking to cruise alone. Overall, the popularity of cruising solo has never been higher and looks to continue growing in the coming years.

Why Cruising Is A Great Option For The New Solo Traveller

There are many reasons why people may choose to go on a cruise alone. Some people value the independence and freedom that comes with not having to coordinate with a travel partner or group. Going solo on a cruise can also be a great way to meet new people and make friends with other travellers. Additionally, cruising alone can be a more budget-friendly travel option, as there are often single occupancy cabins available at a lower cost than a double occupancy room.

A cruise is a great option for solo travellers, as it's safe, there are plenty of activities, and it's the best way to meet new people and make new friends

Many travellers new to solo travel will often opt for a cruise vacation for the following reasons:

  1. there is safety in numbers
  2. easy to meet new people
  3. all in one package makes it easier to budget
  4. stress-free as everything is taken care of
  5. flexibility

Regardless of the reason, cruising is a safe and great way to begin your journey into the world of solo travel.

Just One Tip: If planning a land tour when in port, it is important to remember that the ship will not wait for your return prior to departing. To ensure that you don’t “miss the boat”, reserve any land tours through the cruise line.

Solo Travellers Won’t Get Bored On A Cruise

Many people tend not to travel solo for the fear of getting bored. In some instances, this is true, however, there are many activities on a cruise ship that will keep the solo cruiser active and entertained throughout the cruise.

With a plethora of activities offered on a cruise, the solo cruiser will be constantly entertained and won't get bored.

Of course there will be the ports of call on your chosen cruise itinerary which will keep you busy on the days when in port. However, there are plenty of things that will also keep solo cruisers occupied throughout the days at sea. With all of these activities and options, the solo cruiser will never be bored:

  • Join group activities and events: Cruise ships offer a variety of group activities and events that solo cruisers can participate in, such as trivia games, dance classes, and craft workshops. Not only are these activities fun, but they can also help solo travellers meet new people.
  • Try out new dining experiences: Most cruise ships offer a variety of dining experiences, such as specialty restaurants and unique food and drink tastings. Solo travellers can take advantage of these options and try out new foods and drinks without feeling obligated to stick to their usual routine.
  • Take advantage of onboard amenities: Many cruise ships offer amenities such as pools, hot tubs, and fitness centers. Solo travellers can spend time relaxing or working out on their own schedule without having to worry about coordinating with others.
  • Attend shows and performances: From Broadway-style shows to comedy acts, cruise ships offer a wide range of entertainment options. Solo travellers can attend any of these shows and enjoy the performances at their own pace.
  • Spend time in the onboard library: Reading a book can be a great way to pass the time on a cruise ship. Solo travellers can head to the library or game room and relax while engaging with their favourite activities.
  • Take in the ocean views: One of the best things about being on a cruise ship is the stunning ocean views. Solo travellers can spend time soaking up the scenery, either by lounging on the deck or taking a stroll around the ship.
When cruising solo, the best way to meet new people is to participate in one of the many onboard activities offered by the cruise director

Choosing the Right Cruise Line For A Solo Cruise

Once you’ve completed your research, including cruise itinerary, port of embarkation, and expense, it’s now time to decide which cruise line is the right one for a solo cruise. There are many things that first time solo cruisers will need to take into consideration before choosing which cruise line is best:

  1. Safety: Look for a cruise line that has a good safety record and takes security seriously.
  2. Cabin options: Solo travellers may want to consider cruise lines that offer solo cabins or waive the single supplement fee.
  3. Dining options: Look for cruise lines that offer flexible dining options, so you can eat alone or with others as you choose.
  4. Activities: Consider your interests and look for cruise lines that offer activities you enjoy and opportunities to meet other passengers.
  5. Itinerary: Choose a cruise line that visits ports you want to see and fits your travel style.
  6. Budget: Solo cruises can be pricey, so consider the cost of the cruise and any additional fees before making a decision.

By taking these factors into consideration, solo cruisers can find the best cruise line for their needs and have an enjoyable and safe trip.

Pricing a Solo Cruise

As previously mentioned, cruising alone can be expensive. When deciding on the best cruise cabin for your solo cruise, take the following into consideration:

  • does the cruise line have solo cabins
  • is the single supplement waived
  • is an inside room, ocean view, or balcony cabin best
  • location of stateroom on the ship
When pricing a cruise when cruising solo, check the difference in prices between a solo cabin and a balcony. Many cruise lines offer specials that are cheaper

It is also important to remember that in addition to the cruise price and taxes, the following expenses will also be incurred:

  • flights if you have to fly to the city of embarkation
  • daily tips are usually added at the time of booking
  • alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks if not included in the package
  • additional price if single supplement isn’t waived (usually up to an additional 50%)
  • any purchases made throughout the cruise
  • land tours
  • specialty dining restaurants onboard the ship
  • spa treatments

Just One Tip: In order to avoid and/or minimize sea sickness, choose a cabin mid-ship (half-way in height, as well as half-way in length). These rooms are more expensive, but well worth the extra expense if you tend to get motion sickness.

Best Cruise Lines for Solo Cruisers

Let’s face it, there is really no such thing as the “best” cruise line. They are all great! However, not all cruise lines are created equal when it comes to cruising solo.

It is said that the following cruise lines provide a great experience for solo cruisers. From solo traveller meet-ups to staterooms designed specifically for one person, these cruise lines are known to cater to the needs of solo cruisers.

  1. Norwegian Cruise Line: Norwegian Cruise Line is the pioneer of solo cruising. The Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Pride of America all offer studio staterooms designed specifically for solo cruisers. It’s important to note that these rooms are much smaller than the typical stateroom (which are also quite small). Norwegian also offers a separate lounge which is designated to solo cruisers.
  2. Virgin Voyages: In 2022, Virgin Voyages was named “among the best cruises for solo travellers” by US News & World Report. What makes sailing with Virgin Voyages so special is that it strictly caters to adults over 18 years of age.
  3. Royal Caribbean: Royal Caribbean also offers solo cabins on select ships. These rooms are located in a special area of the ship and come with a private lounge exclusively for solo travellers.
  4. Holland America: Holland America’s two newest and largest ships each offer 28 solo cabins.
  5. Cunard: Select Cunard ships offer single occupancy staterooms that are spacious and well-appointed.
  6. Viking Ocean Cruises: Viking Ocean Cruises offers small single occupancy cabins on every ship. They also have a no children policy which makes it a great choice for solo cruisers seeking peace and quiet.
  7. Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity is known to be the pioneer when it comes to solo cruisers. Many of the newer ships offer solo cabins with a balcony. They also offer nightly meet-ups for solo cruisers. These meet-ups will not always be noted in the nightly newsletter, so look at the activities boards or visit customer service to see when and where the meet-ups are.

There are many other exceptional cruise lines that don’t specifically cater to the solo traveller. Prior to choosing which cruise line is best for you, research the other cruise lines to ensure that you are getting the best deal possible.

Just One Tip: Before reserving a single occupancy stateroom, compare the price to the regular rooms. Frequently the cruise lines have specials which may be cheaper than the solo cabin.
