Senior Solo Travel in 2026: Popular Travel Styles For Seniors

As a senior myself, it comes as no surprise to me that senior women are quickly becoming the leaders when it comes to solo travel. Senior solo travel in 2026 will look much different from the typical packaged bus tours of the past. Today’s senior solo travellers tend to prefer trips that feel more meaningful, flexible, comfortable, and adventurous, that also provide more independence.

Since I began this blog in 2018, senior solo travel has moved from niche to mainstream. In this post I’ll explore the trends predicted for 2026, the numbers behind the boom, why women are driving much of the growth, as well as a closer look at the types preferred travel.

Solo Travel Is Growing

Statistics show that solo travel among seniors has risen drastically. Seniors are no longer waiting. They are using their post-career years or semi-retirement years to explore the world on their own. Some reports are showing that women represent 60 to 70% of the solo travel population.

A 2025 report done by JourneyWoman revealed that of the solo travellers, 61% are women in the 50+ age bracket. They have also predicted a further substantial growth by 2035.

Why The Surge In Solo Travel Among Older Women?

While it is unknown as to why there has been such a sudden surge in senior solo travel, many reports and studies have indicated that there is a desire for more personal time after years of caregiving. Today’s senior women also have increased financial independence, health and longevity which allows for more travel years.

As a result, I have noticed that there are more single person bookings, as well as a higher demand for women only tour products, which offer safety forward options.

Safety, Health And Technology

Seniors solo travellers have become tech savvy and use apps for booking, activities, and translation

When senior women are booking their solo trip, their number 1 concern is safety. This has resulted in tour operators offering more tours targeting solo travellers. For obvious reasons, seniors also prioritize health insurance – unlike the younger generation. When searching for the best insurance, they are not only looking at the price, but they want to ensure that pre-existing conditions are covered.

Seniors have adapted to technology more than people think. They are comfortable working with different apps and aren’t afraid to use them when planning their time away.

Types Of Travel Trending In 2026 For Senior Solo Travellers

As a travel agent, I have noticed that senior solo travellers no longer want to rush through the destinations they visit. They are looking for trips that allows them time to relax, explore and experience the culture, while still maintaining a sense of adventure. Below is a deep dive look into what the trends for senior solo travel in 2026 are looking like:

Slow Travel With Longer Stays

One of the most noticeable trends in senior solo travel in 2026 is that mature travellers prefer slow travel. Rather than hopping between multiple cities and destinations, seniors are choosing to stay longer in the same place. This allows them to experience the culture more intimately.

Because they are spending sometimes weeks in the same destination, they are tending to avoid hotels and resorts. In order to keep cost to a minimum, they tend to rent apartments or condos or find a long-stay hotel with kitchenettes.

Small Group And Solo Within A Group Travel

Travelling solo in group travel is trending among seniors in 2026

Many senior solo travellers want to maintain their independence without feeling isolated. Group travel takes care of both of these issues. More and more solo senior travellers are opting to be a solo within a group, which has resulted in tour groups focusing more on solo travellers.

Small group travel offers:

  • Small group sizes, typically 8 – 15 people
  • Private rooms with shared experiences
  • Optional activities and free time
  • Guided cultural tours

By travelling solo within a group tour, you will have built-in safety, companionship, and expert guidance, while still having alone time whenever you want it.

Nature Based And Outdoor Experiences

Nature focused travel is a huge type of travel that’s trending for senior solo travellers in 2026. Rather than extreme adventure, seniors have shifted their focus to more accessible outdoor experiences. Common choices are scenic hiking, lakeside retreats, and wildlife tours.

Rail And Road Trips

Rail journeys and road trips have become popular with solo seniors who value comfort, flexibility, and scenic travel.

These travel styles will reduce the stress of the airport and allow you to travel at your own time, while enjoying the journey as much as the destination.

Wellness And Retreat Based Travel

wellness retreats and nordic spas are a popular for senior solo travel in 2026

The baby boomer generation has kept the spa business thriving, so it’s only natural that wellness travel has become a popular trend in senior solo travel.

More and more seniors are booking wellness focused trips such as yoga retreats, thermal spa destinations, and quiet seaside escapes. For solo seniors, this type of trip offers the opportunity to rejuvenate, as well as the chance to meet people and make new friends.

Cultural Immersion and Learning Trips

More senior solo travellers are looking for long-stays and cultural travel in 2026

Senior solo travellers are increasingly interested in learning while travelling. In 2026, trips with educational components are especially popular. Many senior solo travellers are booking trips that will immerse them in the culture of the destination, such as cooking classes, food-focused travel, and history and heritage tours.

This type of travel will take you far beyond just sightseeing and being a tourist. These trips offer enrichment and the feeling of being part of the community.

Women Only Travel Experiences

It’s not a surprise that women senior travellers are looking for women only travel experiences. As a result, there have been more and more women only tour groups popping up. These groups are lead by women, they provide women only accommodations, and design the trips with safety in mind.

Women only offers senior solo travellers confidence, camaraderie, and peace of mind. This is especially important if you’re a first time solo traveller or if you’re returning to travel later in life.

Off Season And Shoulder Season Travel

Seniors prefer off-season or shoulder season travel as it's cheaper and there are less crowds

The majority of seniors are on a fixed budget, so travelling during the off season or shoulder season saves money and avoids crowds. This provides for a much more relaxed experience, not to mention slightly cooler temperatures (which us seniors prefer).
