This is especially true if you arrive without doing a little homework. I absolutely loved my time in Samana, but I also learned a few lessons the hard way and I want to share the mistakes to avoid when visiting Samana with you.

Expecting A Typical All-Inclusive Resort Experience

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when visiting Samana, a small town in the Dominican Republic, is assuming that it’s like Punta Cana. Samana is quieter, more nature-focused, and far less commercial and touristy. Personally, this is what I loved about it, but it might not be for everyone.

While there are resorts, much of the area is about waterfalls, beaches, boat rides, and small towns. If you’re expecting nightlife, mega malls, or endless entertainment, you may be disappointed. If you’re looking for authentic experiences and natural beauty, you’re in the right place.

I’m not typically an all-inclusive type person, but when visiting Samana, I did stay at an all-inclusive. I stayed at the Bahia Principe Cayacoa Resort. I absolutely fell in love with it! It was by far the best all-inclusive that I’ve ever stayed at. Unfortunately, it never re-opened after COVID. If you are looking for an all-inclusive, Bahia Principe has a couple of other resorts in this area, including one that’s adults only.

Not Planning Transportation Ahead of Time

Transportation is another area where many travellers stumble. Samana isn’t hard to get around, but it does require planning. Public transportation is limited, and taxis aren’t always readily available in remote areas.

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when visiting Samana is assuming you can just “figure it out” once you arrive. Renting a car, arranging transfers, or booking excursions in advance can save you time, stress, and money.

Skipping Los Haitises National Park

I almost skipped Los Haitises National Park. After taking a tour to this beautiful National Park, I realized that this would have been a huge mistake. This park is one of the most unique natural areas in the country, with mangroves, caves, and dramatic limestone formations.

Skipping it is one of the most common mistakes to avoid when visiting Samana. This is especially true if you love nature, photography, or history. It’s easily one of the most memorable experiences in the region.

Visiting Playa Rincón Without Enough Time

Playa Rincón regularly ranks as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, if not the world, but many visitors rush their visit. Getting there takes time, and once you arrive, you’ll want to stay longer than you expect.

A major mistake to avoid when visiting Samana is squeezing Playa Rincón into a tight schedule. Plan for a half day at minimum. Be sure to bring sunscreen, cash for food, and enjoy the slower pace.

I visited Playa Rincon as part of my tour to Los Haitises National Park and unfortunately I only had a couple of hours here. There are many vendor stalls and restaurants, not to mention water sports, which makes it easy to spend an entire day at this beach.

Forgetting Cash In Smaller Towns

While larger hotels and tour operators accept credit cards, many small restaurants, beach vendors, and local guides do not. I quickly learned that cash is essential, especially outside the main tourist areas. While pesos is the currency preferred, many places also accept US dollars.

Not carrying enough cash is a practical but common mistake to avoid when visiting Samana. Samana is not a popular resort area and is considered to be a developing country which means that ATMs aren’t always nearby, so it’s best to plan ahead.

Underestimating The Terrain and Climate

Samana is lush, green, and tropical, which often means humidity, rain showers, and uneven terrain. Wearing the wrong shoes or packing only beachwear can make some activities uncomfortable.

One of the simplest mistakes to avoid when visiting Samaná Dominican Republic is not packing for adventure. Comfortable walking shoes, light rain gear, and breathable clothing make a big difference.

Rushing Through Your Stay

Perhaps the biggest mistake of all is trying to do too much too quickly. Samana isn’t meant to be rushed. Some of my favorite moments came from slowing down. Watching the ocean, chatting with locals, or enjoying a long lunch by the beach, were some of my favourite things to do when visiting Samana.
