Top Things To Do In Samana For First Time Visitors

I’ve visited many Caribbean Islands throughout my travels, but none became one of those places that stayed with me like Samana did. The waterfalls, secluded beaches, and exploring the local town was my idea of the perfect getaway. With so many things to do in Samana, it’s why you need to visit Samana if you get the chance. It’s the ideal vacation destination if you love nature, adventure, and slowing down to really experience the culture and beauty of a destination.

For many reasons, Samana has been my favourite all-inclusive resort destination by far. I would return again in a heartbeat given the opportunity. In this post, I share my favourite things to do when visiting Samana, which are based on my own travels and the moments that truly stood out to me.

Visit El Limon Waterfall

One of the most iconic things to do in Samana among locals and tourists alike is to visit El Limon Waterfall. It truly is a hidden gem in the Dominican Republic.

Getting to the waterfall is half the fun. You can either hike or ride horseback (which I did) through the jungle trails which are lined with palm trees and tropical plans.

Once you finally reach the waterfall, the sight and sound of the water cascading into a natural pool is incredible. I still remember how refreshing the swim felt after my horseback experience. I also clearly remember the anxiety I felt watching the young locals jumping from the top of the waterfall. The mother in me wanted to tell them that they shouldn’t be doing that, but they were clearly experienced and familiar with the area.

Don’t forget to bring your camera when visiting El Limon Waterfall, as it truly is the most instagrammable spot in Samana.

Relax On Playa Rincon

If you love the thought of lazy days on a postcard perfect beach, then Playa Rincon should be high on your list of things to do in Samana. This beach has often been ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and after spending time there, I can see why.

The beach spans approximately 2 miles of white sandy coastline, covered by palm trees throughout. There are also a few small restaurants which serve fresh seafood, as well as a small market where the locals sell their goods. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available to rent for a fee.

To reach Play Rincon, you will need a vehicle. Be aware that a portion of the road is quite bumpy and gets muddy after a rain, but this adds to the adventure. Renting a 4×4 is advisable. If the thought of driving stresses you out too much, there are several tours over to Playa Rincon.

Take A Boat Trip To Los Haitises National Park

Since my happy place is on or near the water, exploring Los Haitises National Park was one of my most memorable things to do in Samana. I did the tour of Los Haitises National Park along with my visit to Playa Rincon beach. The boat ride itself was stunning. It takes you past mangroves, limestone cliffs, and small islands.

Inside the park there are caves with ancient Taino petroglyphs and a wide variety of birds. It’s a peaceful experience and a great way to connect with the region’s history and natural beauty.

Go Whale Watching (seasonal thing to do in Samana)

Whale watching and searching for humpback whales is one of the top things to do in Samana

If you’re visiting Samana between January and March, whale watching is one of the most unique things to do in Samana. The Samana Bay becomes a gathering place for humpback whales. Seeing the whales breach the water is something that I’ll never forget.

Even if you’ve been whale watching elsewhere, there is something special about experiencing it in Samana, surrounded by the mountains and open sea.

Explore The Town Of Santa Barbara de Samana

Beyond the beaches and excursions, one of my favourite things to do in Samana was exploring the town itself. Walking along the Malecon, people watching and visiting small cafes gave me a deeper appreciation of the area.

I loved grabbing a freshly brewed coffee and sitting by the bay just watching the world pass me by. This is what makes travel so meaningful.
