Why Staying in Samana Is Different
Samana is known for its lush landscapes, dramatic coastlines, waterfalls, and its authentic Dominican charm. Unlike larger resort hubs, such as Punta Cana, the accommodations in Samana are much more spread out. This gives you a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and experience the local culture.
When visiting Samana, are you seeking relaxation, adventure, romance, or exploration? The type of trip you are looking for will determine what area you will want to stay.
Best Areas to Stay in Samana
Las Terrenas – Best for Beaches, Dining & Walkability

Las Terrenas is one of the most popular places to stay in Samana, for good reason. It offers beautiful beaches, a lively restaurant scene, and a mix of boutique hotels, beachfront resorts, and vacation rentals.
This area is the ideal spot for first time visitors to Samana, as it’s located within a walkable town with a relaxed vibe, and great restaurants and cafes. In addition, it provides easy access to the nearby towns of Playa Bonita and Play Coson.
If you’re looking for a balance of beach time by day and dining options at night, Las Terrenas offers the best balance.

Samana Town – Best for Boat Tours & Whale Watching

If whale watching, island hopping, or visiting Los Haitises National Park is high on your list, staying near Samana Town is a smart choice.
Staying in or close to Samana will provide the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. It’s also the most convenient area for boat tours and guided excursions.
The hotels in this area are typically smaller and more budget-friendly. This makes it ideal if you’re more focused on experiences rather than luxury.
Recommendation:
This is the area that I stayed in during my trip to Samana. I stayed at the best all-inclusive resort ever which was located right at the edge of town which provided beautiful nature, while still being close enough to town to catch the excursions.
Unfortunately, the resort that I stayed at, Bahia Principe Grand Cayacoa didn’t re-open after COVID. It’s now called Eurostars Grand Cayacoa, and is no longer an all-inclusive resort.

El Limón & the Countryside – Best for Nature Lovers

For travellers craving peace and jungle views, staying inland near El Limón offers a completely different side of Samana.
El Limon is an off-the-beaten-path area, that is surrounded by waterfalls and tropical forest. The accommodations consists mostly of eco-lodges and boutique hotels.
This area is perfect if you plan to do a lot of hiking and want to disconnect from the busy tourist areas. This is not the ideal area if you want to spend days lazing on the beach.

All-Inclusive Resorts
Unlike other areas of the Dominican, Samana doesn’t have a ton of all-inclusive resorts, but it does have some. This is the type of accommodation I recommend if you want a stress-free vacation, with all expenses included.
All-Inclusive accommodations are ideal for couples or solo travellers who are looking for a quiet trip, with lazy days at the beach or around the pool.
Recommendation:
Viva V Samana by Wyndham is a top all-inclusive choice right on BahÃa de Cosón Beach which is perfect for couples or travellers looking for a relaxed adults-only experience.
The resort has multiple restaurants and bars, beachfront access, daily entertainment, spa options, and activities which are included in your stay.
Just One Tip: If you’re travelling during peak season (like whale-watching months Jan–Mar), book well in advance!
Boutique Hotels & Beachfront Inns
If you prefer something smaller and more personal, Samana has plenty of boutique hotels, boasting unique design and local character. Boutique hotels offer more personalized service than all-inclusive resorts, and they’re often located directly on the beach.
This type of accommodation is especially popular in Las Terrenas and along quieter stretches of coastline.
Recommendation:
Sublime Samana Hotel & Residences is one of the more upscale boutique hotels in the region. Located near BahÃa de Coson, it offers spacious suites with ocean or pool views, contemporary design, and easy access to local beaches and restaurants. This makes it a wonderful base for couples or travellers who want boutique luxury with a true Samana vibe.
