Owen Sound is not a typical road trip destination in the Province of Ontario, however, this little known city tucked along the shores of Georgian Bay is the perfect non-touristy destination to spend one day exploring and chasing waterfalls.
How To Make The Most Of One Day In Owen Sound
Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love a spontaneous road trip. Offering beautiful scenery of Georgian Bay, as well as numerous hiking trails and waterfalls, I opted for a quick one day road trip to Owen Sound.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of what Owen Sound has to offer, let’s dive into a little bit of history.
History of Owen Sound, Ontario
Named after the founder of Canada, Sir Richard Owen, Owen Sound has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. Originally a fur trading post, the city quickly grew into a bustling hub for shipbuilding and transportation, serving as a key port during the 19th century.
How to Get to Owen Sound
Owen Sound is located approximately two hours north of Toronto. When spending only the day in Owen Sound, driving is the way to go. However, for longer stays, there are alternatives, such as travelling by bus. Car rentals are available upon arrival.
Exploring Owen Sound by foot is not an easy task, or even an option, a car is required. If you are visiting Owen Sound for more than one day and opt to take the bus to the city, car rentals are available upon arrival.
Spending The Day in Owen Sound
Owen Sound may be a small Canadian city, but it’s packed with things to do and see. If you only have one day to explore, here’s how you can make the most of it.
Begin the day by packing up your road trip essentials and grab a Timmie’s (a road trip essential), before hitting the road.
Street Art Walk
Upon arriving in Owen Sound, begin by exploring the downtown core in order to get a feel for the city. There are many murals created by local artists scattered throughout the downtown area for visitors to enjoy.
Explore the Georgian Bay Shoreline
Owen Sound is located along the shores of Georgian Bay within walking distance from the downtown core. The shoreline offers an abundance of scenic vistas and crystal clear waters. If you do nothing else when visiting Owen Sound, you have to tTake a stroll along the boardwalk or rent a kayak to explore the bay up close.
For a truly relaxing morning, the shoreline also offers many places for relaxation and fishing. Either pack a picnic lunch to enjoy while watching the boats come and go, or grab a bite from one of the food trucks that are scattered along the boardwalk.
Just One Tip: If visiting Owen Sound during the “off-season”, make sure to snap a few photos of the iconic Chi-Cheemaun ferry, which docks in Owen Sound during the colder months.
Walter’s Falls
Walter’s Falls is located approximately 29 kilometers east of Owen Sound, reachable by Grey County Road 19 and 29.
Historically, Walter’s Falls was the site of an old saw mill and woolen mill which has since burnt down. Today the Falls sit directly behind the Walter’s Falls Inn & Spa, and the woolen mill still exists to this day.
Forming a portion of the Bruce Trail, Walter’s Falls offers a tranquil escape from the city, as well as the Walter’s Falls Loop Trail, which will provide access to the base of the waterfalls.
Inglis Falls
In the alternative to visiting Walter’s Falls, it is highly recommended that visitors to Owen Sound visit Inglis Falls if you only have one day in Owen Sound.
Inglis Falls is one of the most popular attractions in Owen Sound. Inglis Falls is a stunning waterfall nestled in a park setting. The waterfall is located in the heart of the city, making it a convenient stop for a quick photo opportunity.
JUST ONE TIP: There is a cost of $10.00 plus HST when visiting Inglis Falls. Cash is not accepted, so bring your debit card or credit card.
Road Trip Along Georgian Bay
If you have enough time, I also recommend taking a short road trip along Georgian Bay. You will pass by beautiful beaches and marinas, not to mentioned the many luxury homes.
You will want to stop at the Kemble Women’s Institute Lookout. This lookout was built and is maintained by abused women. Stop by to pay tribute to ending domestic violence!

SAVE FOR ONE DAY IN OWEN SOUND
We love to head out in Ontario and explore all the smaller towns. We have been to Owen Sound a few times. You found some great street art we missed. And we still have not made it to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. Lots of reason to go back.
My favourite part is hanging out by the river. There’s a great food truck in the summer. Next time you go, check out they alleys for the street art. Next time I go I’ll be chasing some waterfalls
This looks really nice and I often like going off the beaten track! Plus a spontaneous road trip is always a good idea!
You won’t find a lot of tourists in Owen Sound and you’re still right on the water. There’s a ton of waterfalls in this area as well.
Owen Sound looks like the perfect place to visit for a weekend break from Toronto. I love those waterfalls and shoreline. The art gallery, rail and marine museum and the trail add to the things to do. That image of the food-truck meal looks totally yummy! 🙂
It’s a great spot to visit for a day. The waterfront is beautiful and there are so many great hiking trails and waterfalls there.
I can’t believe I’ve never been to Canada growing up in the northern states. This is going on the list!

Love Owen Sound! Thanks for the great recommendations.
I do as well. I especially love sitting by the waterfront
