Rafting The Martha Brae River
After seeing commercials and pictures of people rafting a river on a bamboo raft, I decided that this was something that I had to do. It looked so peaceful and being the nature lover that I am, I fell in love with the idea of the peace and tranquility of “sailing” through nature.

When on a cruise that had Jamaica as one of the ports, I didn’t hesitate to book a tour which allowed me to raft down the Martha Brae River. I will have to tell you that this tour was one of the best tours that I’ve ever experienced. I’d do it again and again if the opportunity arose.
In this post, I’ll provide a full guide to rafting the Martha Brae River, including some insider tips that you should know before you go.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to book your rafting experience!
Discovering Martha Brae’s Charm
Tucked away in the parish of Trelawny, the Martha Brae River is not just a waterway; it’s an embodiment of Jamaica’s natural allure. Its allure isn’t just in its waters but in the stories woven into its fabric. Legend has it that Martha Brae, a slave woman, escaped from captivity and, using her knowledge of the river’s bends and curves, eluded her captors. The river was named in honor of her cunning escape.
The Rafting Experience
Rafting on the Martha Brae is an immersive journey through time and nature.
After approximately a half hour drive from the cruise port in Falmouth, you will arrive at Martha Brae. Upon arrival, you will be given a refreshing drink and an opportunity to use the restrooms before leaving on the tour.

You will then be partnered up (most people were couples), given life jackets and led down a set of stairs to the rafts.
The adventure begins as you embark on a bamboo raft which has been crafted by the “captains” of the rafts. These rafts are meticulously woven and embody the essence of the river, ensuring a serene and eco-friendly voyage.
Just One Tip: If you are taking this tour solo, request that you have your own raft, otherwise, you will be partnered with another solo traveller. This is one tip that I wish I knew beforehand.
Nature’s Canvas
As you gently float along the river’s tranquil waters, a panoramic view unfolds. Towering trees draped in emerald foliage create a lush canopy, offering a cool respite from the Caribbean sun. The melodies of exotic birds and the rustling of leaves compose a symphony that harmonizes with the rhythmic flow of the river.
Vendors line the banks of the river attempting to sell their goods. Some even sell alcoholic drinks which will quench your thirst on a hot day. If you see an item that interests you, let your captain know and he will stop. Otherwise, feel free to pass on any purchases.

Tales and Traditions
Throughout the rafting experience, the captain relishes in sharing tales of the river’s history, culture, and folklore with his passengers. Take full advantage of this and learn about the indigenous flora and fauna while immersing yourself in the rich traditions of Jamaica.
Eco-Tourism and Sustainability
The Martha Brae River isn’t just an attraction; it’s a commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism. The rafting experience is designed to minimize environmental impact while supporting the local economy. The use of bamboo rafts which are crafted using traditional methods, ensures an eco-friendly adventure.
Planning Your Adventure
When planning your Martha Brae adventure, there are some tips that you will want to consider:
- Timing: Opt for morning or late afternoon trips to avoid the midday heat and to witness the river in its most serene state.
- Attire: Dress comfortably and consider bringing a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
- Photography: Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking scenery along the way.
- Cash: Bring cash with you for purchasing souvenirs and tipping the captain of your raft.
- Swimsuit and Towel: It is possible to swim in the river, however, if you’re on a guided tour, you lKikely won’t be given the time to do so. Bring a swimsuite and towel just in case.

Know Before You Go
- The rafting experience takes approximately 1 hour
- This tour is acceptable for people of all physical conditions, however, it isn’t wheelchair accessible
- The maximum weight allowance for two guests is a combined 550 lbs (250 kg)
- Prepare to tip your guide
- Your guide will attempt to sell you items hand-crafted by him. It’s acceptable to bargain, however, don’t be insulting
- A photographer will take your picture and attempt to sell it to you at the end of the experience. This is a great keepsake at a reasonable price. If you’re travelling solo, this is one reason you want your own raft, as your partner will be in the pictures with you

SAVE THE GUIDE FOR RAFTING MARTHA BRAE
Really appreciate this post as we might do rafting this year. Is there a seat or do the passengers stand too?
You have to sit. But I’m sure if you want to stand for a bit, the “captain” will let you.
I’ve never been to Jamaica, and I would absolutely love to go. Saving this for later!
I was surprised at how beautiful Jamaica was and this tour was the best!
Okay, I’m totally adding rafting the Martha Brae River to my Jamaica bucket list! The tour looks so tranquil with the bamboo bending over the river. Plus, I love the story behind the name!
It was honestly one of the best tours I’ve done. The guides made it so much fun. At one point we were all racing down the river lol
Great review. There are so many beautiful places to visit in Jamaica…. I love to do some rafting on this river. I wonder if they have river tubing available also? Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you! I don’t think they have tubing on this river. The current doesn’t seem quick enough. If you’re ever in Jamaica, I HIGHLY recommend doing the rafting.
Yes, I actually visited in 2023 but there are so many things to do there that I know I need to visit again.
I’m so happy to read this glowing review about Martha Brae! Surely, it’s one of my favourite places and tours ever taken in Jamaica 🙂
Thank you Rochelle. That means a lot coming from a local! Honestly, it’s been one of my favourite tours that I’ve done in any port. I could have stayed all day.
