My Personal Experience Exploring Moorea By ATV And What You Can Expect To See
First, let me tell you that I had never ridden or even been on an ATV before. So if I can do it, so can you! In my personal opinion, four wheeling around Moorea was so much fun and exciting which makes it by far the best way to explore the off-the-beaten-path areas of the island.
Booking An ATV Tour In Moorea
Before heading to Moorea, I knew that I wanted to experience something different during my three days visiting the island. I searched the web and landed upon ATV excursions. I thought this sounded exciting and it would definitely be a different experience for me.
I booked my ATV adventure online and I had zero issues. On the day of the scheduled tour, I was picked up by the tour company at my hotel and taken to the ATV departure area. Prior to departure, we were required to show our driver’s license, fill out waivers, etc. and given a run-down on how to drive the ATV’s.
The group was extremely small with only two ATV’s and the guide, hence, we received lots of personal attention.
During our morning tour, we visited the main attractions on the island and were privileged to experience some of the culture. The following are a few of the sights that you can expect to see during a half day ATV discovery tour around Moorea:
Belvedere Lookout
The Belvedere Lookout is a breathtaking vantage point that offers panoramic views of the stunning landscape of Moorea. Situated in the heart of the island’s lush interior, the Belvedere Lookout provides visitors with a spectacular view of the island’s rugged volcanic peaks, lush green valleys, and the crystal-clear waters of Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay.
The Belvedere Lookout can be accessed by car, however, I highly recommend exploring this lookout by ATV. Once you reach the lookout, you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking panorama that showcases the island’s dramatic geological features, including the iconic Mt. Rotui, which rises majestically between the two bays.
The Belvedere Lookout is a popular stop for tourists and nature enthusiasts, and is a must visit for travellers searching for the perfect insta-worthy photo.
Pineapple Farms in Moorea by ATV
Pineapple farms in Moorea are known for their tropical charm and the cultivation of delicious and sweet pineapples. These farms play a significant role in the island’s economy and tourism industry.
Pineapple farming provides employment opportunities for local residents and contributes to the island’s agricultural sector.
The pineapple in Moorea tastes nothing like it does here in North America. It is sweet and extremely fresh, without leaving a bitter taste in your mouth (I ate it every day).
Four wheeling by far is the best way to explore the off-the-beaten path pineapple farms.
Roadside Shops In Moorea
One of the charming aspects of Moorea that adds to its unique character is the presence of roadside shops, which offer visitors a delightful glimpse into the island’s traditions, crafts, and culinary delights.
During our ATV tour of Moorea, we had the opportunity to visit a roadside shop and taste some of the famous homemade jam, made right on the island of Moorea.
When visiting the roadside shops scattered along Moorea’s roadway, you can expect to find:
1. Traditional Crafts: Roadside shops in Moorea often showcase the rich Polynesian heritage through traditional crafts and artwork. Visitors can find beautiful handwoven baskets, intricate wood carvings, and exquisite pareos (colorful sarongs) that reflect the island’s culture and artistry. These shops are excellent places to pick up authentic souvenirs to remember your visit by.
2. Fresh Tropical Fruits: Moorea’s fertile land yields an abundance of tropical fruits, and roadside stands offer an opportunity to taste these fresh, exotic treats. From succulent pineapples and sweet mangoes to fragrant papayas and coconuts, you can savor the flavors of the South Pacific while on the go. The friendly vendors often provide samples and are happy to share their knowledge about the fruits and their uses.
3. Local Cuisine: Exploring Moorea’s roadside shops also means indulging in the island’s delicious local cuisine. Food stalls and small eateries serve up mouthwatering Polynesian dishes, such as poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk), taro-based delicacies, and grilled seafood. It’s an excellent opportunity to savor authentic flavors while enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of the island.
4. Handmade Jewelry: Many roadside shops in Moorea feature handmade jewelry, often incorporating vibrant Tahitian pearls. These pearls are known for their unique luster and come in various shapes and colors, making them highly sought after by visitors. You can find necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that are both elegant and a beautiful reminder of your time in Moorea.
Just One Tip: Visitors to the French Polynesia are not allowed to bring pearls. You will want to read What To Pack For Your Dream Vacation (and what not to pack) before leaving for Moorea.
5. Local Art Galleries: Some roadside shops also double as small art galleries, showcasing the work of local artists. These galleries exhibit a range of artwork, from paintings and sculptures to photography, all inspired by Moorea’s breathtaking scenery and vibrant culture.
6. Friendly Interactions: One of the most enjoyable aspects of visiting roadside shops in Moorea is the opportunity for friendly interactions with the local people. Mooreans are known for their warm hospitality and are often eager to share stories, traditions, and local insights with visitors. Engaging in conversations with the locals can enhance your cultural experience on the island.
Fresh Water Eels Found In Moorea
Freshwater eels found in Moorea belong to the species known as the Tahitian eel or Anguilla obscura. These eels are fascinating and integral to the island’s aquatic ecosystems.
Species and Habitat
The freshwater eels in Moorea are primarily represented by the Tahitian eel (Anguilla obscura). They inhabit the island’s freshwater rivers, streams, and ponds, and they are known for their distinctive appearance, characterized by a long, slender body covered in mucus.
Life Cycle
Freshwater eels in Moorea are catadromous, which means they spend most of their lives in freshwater but migrate to the ocean to reproduce. After hatching in the open ocean, young eels, called leptocephali, drift with ocean currents to Moorea’s shores. Upon reaching the island’s rivers and streams, they transform into glass eels and then yellow eels. After several years, they undergo a metamorphosis into silver eels and return to the ocean to spawn and complete their life cycle.
The leptocephali are left to their own devices to find their way to the islands rivers. Many don’t make it as the sharks get to them first.
Ecological Importance
Freshwater eels play a crucial role in Moorea’s aquatic ecosystems. They are both predator and prey, feeding on small aquatic creatures like crustaceans and insects while serving as food for larger predators such as birds and fish (sharks). Their migration from freshwater to the ocean also helps transport essential nutrients between these ecosystems.
Cultural Significance
Tahitian eels hold cultural significance in Moorea and throughout French Polynesia. They are often featured in local folklore and are considered a traditional food source.
Conservation Challenges
Freshwater eels worldwide, including those in Moorea, face conservation challenges due to habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. Efforts to protect and conserve these eels involve measures such as maintaining water quality, preserving their habitats, and implementing sustainable fishing practices.
While I agree that these slimy creatures aren’t the most attractive, they were fascinating to watch. You aren’t able to reach this area by car which is another reasons why you should tour Moorea by ATV.
Temples In Moorea
Temples in Moorea play a significant role in the island’s cultural and spiritual landscape. Moorea, often referred to as the “Magical Island,” is known for its stunning natural beauty and vibrant Polynesian culture. The temples, locally known as “Marae,” are an essential part of this cultural heritage.
The temples in Moorea are very different than what you would expect. They are remnants of the times that were, however, the temples continue to hold a spiritual significance for the locals and many rituals are still performed at these sacred sites. The marae serve as a bridge between Moorea’s past and present, connecting generations through shared cultural practices.
The temples are a little more challenging to reach by car, which makes exploring the temples by an all wheel drive vehicle the way to go.
