Extreme Adventure In Antigua

Recommended by: Isabella of Boundless Roads

I have lived in Antigua and Barbuda for a little less than two years and I have seen every corner of the island and done almost every tour. My favorite one is the Extreme Adventure by Adventure Antigua, a local company that organizes boat tours. The owner is also a philanthropist and does a lot for the Antiguan and Barbuda community, which is one more reason that I love to book their tours.

But, besides that, the Extreme Adventure is a great tour for many reasons. It’s a small boat tour and they accept a small number of people so that you have a lot of space for yourself on the boat and stay comfortable.

They take you to snorkel at the Pillars of Hercules and Sting Ray City and then you will cruise by the  Nelson’s Dockyard where the Captain points out ALL the historic colonial structures and gives you a short brief about the area and its historical significance.

Then you will stop by Randezvous Bay, a secluded beach that you can only reach by boat or by hiking. There you will have some beach time where you can swim and enjoy a delicious lunch.   During the cruising time, you will be able to admire the spectacular Antigua coastline. The tour lasts all day and it will take you to two of the best snorkeling spots in Antigua

Swimming With The Stingrays In Antigua.

Recommended by: Sara of Big Adventures With Little Feet

Swimming with the stingrays is one of the top excursions and a must do experience when visiting Antigua

Swimming and snorkelling with stingrays is one of the most popular tours in Antigua.  It’s one of my favourite tours and my family loves it so much that we’ve done the tour three times!

It’s an exciting excursion which allows you to get close to the stingrays in their own environment on a sandbar out at sea. What I really like is that it’s safe for all ages, and you don’t need to be able to swim as you’re in chest deep water.

Before you go the guide will hand out the snorkelling gear and a buoyancy aid, plus give you a briefing that includes a demonstration of the “stingray shuffle” so that you don’t stand on the sting in the tail.

You’ll take a 20 minute boat ride out to the sandbar where the stingrays will be.

Once in the water you can start to snorkel around and you’ll start to notice that the stingrays are gliding around you – it’s incredible!

Top tip – they’re like puppies and brush past you for attention, so don’t be surprised if one touches you as they pass.   It made me jump the first time it happened, haha!

The guides will then bring out some food to feed the stingrays and will provide instructions on the proper to feed them.  You’ll also be able to touch and stroke the stingrays under the supervision of the guides.

You’ll be given plenty of time to enjoy the experience and it won’t feel rushed.  We spend a lot of our time watching the stingrays gliding past us.

TOP TIP: pop by Long Bay afterwards for more snorkelling and you might see turtles

There is only one company in Antigua that offers this experience and it’s called Stingray City.

Nassau To Exumas Tour: The Best Tour In The Caribbean

Recommended by: Aswani of A Charming Escape

Whether you visit Nassau or any other islands/cays in the Bahamas, a tour of Exuma Cays is a must.

The archipelago of Exumas is one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean with turquoise blue waters, sandbars and incredible experiences like swimming with the pigs and feeding nurse sharks.

This is a perfect day tour if you are staying in a resort in Nassau. We stayed at The Atlantis in Paradise Island and it was ideal for an Exumas day tour because many tours offer pick up and drop off from/to the resort.

While there are many power boat tours from Nassau to Exumas, we chose Bahamas Air Tours because they fly you from Nassau to Staniel Cay in a plane and you take the boat tour from there. This saved overall time spent on the power boat which was especially helpful with a toddler. An added bonus is the incredible view from above.

The tour itself was amazing with the typical stops on Exumas Cays like the pig beach, feeding the nurse sharks, Iguana beach and snorkeling Thunderball Grotto. We also spent some time on a secluded sandbar with a swing and it was perfect!

This tour is highly recommended for anyone who want to save time but see all of Exumas attractions with delicious lunch and snacks/drinks.

Pro Tip: Note that you spend a lot of time on the power boat travelling between the cays. Stay well hydrated, carry sun protection and dry clothes.

Ocean Atlas, Bahamas

Recommended by: Kay of The Awkward Traveller

On an excursion snorkelling Ocean Atlas just off the coast of the Bahamas

Ocean Atlas in the Bahamas is an underwater sculpture park created by The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) to encourage coral colonization and shifting tourists away from other popular reefs that are currently endangered.

The sculptures, which double as building blocks for coral to grow on, were crafted by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who also served as the creative mind behind the FIRST underwater sculpture park in the world located in Grenada, and has gone on to create underwater art museums off the coast of both Mexico and Spain.

Ocean Atlas is housed within the Clifton Heritage National Park, about a 35-40 minute drive from Nassau. By paying the entrance fee to Ocean Atlas, visitors can enjoy the four quiet beaches on the property, away from the busy crowds of Nassau or explore their exhibitions on Bahamian heritage and resilience. Hands down though, the most popular thing to do is to sign up to take a snorkel tour with an experienced guide to view the Ocean Atlas sculptures.

The main piece of Ocean Atlas is a statue of a young Bahamian girl who is crouched down and holding the ocean above her head, representing the importance we each have in preserving our ocean. You will also see multiple other statues and art pieces with flourishing new coral.

Along with the guide, snorkel masks, and fins, the tour will also include information about the park and The Bahamas as a whole. Just…do ensure you are a strong swimmer as the pieces are about a fifteen minute swim from the shore and you might get tired.

Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas

Recommended by: Annie of Your Friend the Nomad

Spend the day relaxing on the white sand beaches at the Virgin Voyages Beach Club in Bimini, Bahamas

For a perfect day on the beach in the Caribbean, head straight to Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini. Located on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas, this exclusive beach club is the place to be.

The beach club has two large pools, several bars, and two kitchens that serve a delicious Caribbean-inspired lunch. But of course the highlight of the beach club is the beach itself with its white sand and turquoise blue water.

Arrive early to snag a front-row sun lounger by the water. Keep in mind that there are certain areas of the beach that are reserved for ‘rock star suite’ members from Virgin Voyages, but there are plenty of loungers, hammocks, and chairs for everyone.

Once you’re at the beach club there are several things you do, and fun activities that vary based on the day. You can always walk along the beach, swim in the gorgeous water, relax in a hammock, and join the dance party in the pool.

Other activities at the Bimini Beach Club include paddle board yoga and Survivor-style group games.

You can also base yourself at the Bimini Beach Club while exploring more of this charming tiny island. You can get around the island by golf cart, or by the tram, which runs between the beach club and the cruise port, and further down the island.

Snorkeling The Belize Barrier Reef

Recommended by: Zoe of Zoe Goes Places

The world's best coral reefs can be found in the Caribbean Island of Belize. Book a snorkelling tour for the ultimate reef snorkelling experience.

Beautiful Belize. With its blue skies, blue seas and always giving you the post-travel blues as you miss the unique culture, tasty food and slow way of life.

There’s plenty of great activities to do in Belize. From historic ruins to jungle pools and, of course, experiencing the Caribbean food delights. But one activity rises above all the rest: snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef.

Honestly, it’s just magical. Once you put your head below the water it’s like you’ve entered a whole new world, one full of color, life and calm. Everywhere you look there are fish swimming around and bright coral swaying in the gentle current. The underwater beauty makes snorkeling in Belize the best shore excursion.

You’ll stop at a few different spots along the barrier reef, including Hol Chan Marine Reserve which is home to turtles, fish and coral. As well as Shark Ray Alley, where you’ll swim with (and be surrounded by) nurse sharks and rays. There’s also the possibility of seeing manatees and a shipwreck.

Snorkeling tours in Belize generally run from either Caye Caulker or San Pedro. But you can also find some that include the boat transfer from Belize City if your cruise is docking there, or book the boat yourself when you get there.

Are you ready to snorkel the Barrier Reef in beautiful Belize?

Make sure to pack some reef-safe sunscreen to protect this precious environment and also wear a long-sleeved top to prevent sunburn. A waterproof camera or a GoPro is also a must to capture this beautiful day.

Baths National Park, British Virgin Islands

Recommended by: Kim of Explore Your Bucket List

If you are travelling in the British Virgin Islands on a smaller ship, chances are you will have the opportunity to visit the small island of Virgin Gorda. Or if you are on a larger ship or staying at a resort, you can visit this island by ferry from Tortola. The island is only 21 sq kms and really offers a beautiful, natural environment for exploring.

The perfect shore excursion is a visit to the famous Baths National Park. Here you will walk along a trail carved from the rocks to reach the ocean’s edge. There are incredible vistas and a variety of plant life including numerous types of cacti.

Once you reach the beach, you start to see enormous granite boulders that are piled on top of each other forming natural caves. There are rope systems and stairs that lead you further down and into the maze of caves where you will see crystal-clear water with sunshine peeking through the crevices. This is a truly spectacular sight. The water is warm like a bath and since it is shallow, it is enjoyable to just sit and take in the serene beauty around you.

Once you continue your walk you come out to a stunning beach area that has swimming and snorkeling available. There is also a snack bar and vendors with items for sale. It is a perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Take a tour through Bath Caves National Park in the British Virgin Islands for a day of fun and adventure

Pro Tip: Take a private tour so the driver can beat the buses from the ship. This will give you some private time in the baths before everyone gets there. It is well worth it.

Stingray City, Coral Reef Snorkel & Starfish Point, Cayman Islands

Recommended by: Rebecca of Fab 5 Family Travel

On a recent Disney Cruise, we spent a day in the Caymans. Instead of trying one of the cruise excursions, I opted for a highly rated 3-stop Caribbean tour on Viator. Our tour included three stops with highly knowledgeable guides. We spent some time snorkeling at a coral reef (all equipment provided), swimming at Stingray City, and heading to a beach at Starfish Point.

Seeing the starfish was incredible, and the stingray stop was fascinating. Some guides hopped into the water to help show guests the beauty of these animals. They held up the stingrays for photo-ops and taught the younger children about them.

The price point of the tour was very affordable, especially since it lasted for several hours and we could see so much. I highly recommend trying this 5-star tour the next time you are in the Caymans. It was the highlight of our trip.

Pro Tip- pack snacks & cash! The excursion lasted for several hours, and towards the end, we were starving. On the last stop at Starfish Beach, there was a food boat serving wings and fried shrimp, but they only took cash. You may want to try the food as it was delicious, but also to tip the amazing guides!

Canal Tour In Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Recommended by: Michele of Adventures Abound

Tortuguero itself is a remote community, separated by a river on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Traveling to this region, however, is well worth it.

We explored the canals of Tortuguero with Tuanis Tours and had an amazing time. Our guide was fluent in English and pointed out tons of wildlife in the park, from Green Macaws to Caymans (a tiny crocodile-like reptile) and even sloths!

We met two ladies who had taken the tour the day before, as well as a night walking tour, and loved it so much they came again that morning. They booked the tour through their resort at Evergreen Lodge who sent them directly to the park by boat. This remote national park in the northern Caribbean coast is a must on your travel guide to Costa Rica.

As the name suggests, the area is famous for the turtles who come to lay their eggs on shore, which tourists can see on the night walking tours from June – October.

Just be sure that you and your guide do not interfere with the turtles. Be sure to follow all instructions from your guide to protect these treasures for years to come.

A Day Trip To Klein, Curacao: A Fun Caribbean Exursion

Recommended by: Sabrina of Shades of Summr

A day trip to Klein, Curacao is one of the best shore excursions in the Caribbean. If you have Willemstad, Curacao as a port of call on your cruise itinerary, this is the one excursion you can’t miss.  Board a small catamaran or speedboat and head over to the uninhabited island of Klein Curacao. We usually prefer booking the trip with Breeze Adventures. They have the smallest boat, which means small group and maximum fun.

If you get seasick easily, opt for Miss Ann Boat Trips, their yacht is bigger and more stable on the waters. They also offer massages and snorkel equipment and have a cool area to relax.

Klein Curacao has a lot to offer. The island is a hidden paradise, with an endless white sandy beach, super clear blue water and an amazing reef for snorkeling. The island is pretty famous, because you can snorkel with sea turtles there.

You can walk over to the lighthouse or simply relax on one of the beach chairs. There is no cell service or Wifi on the island, so you’ll be able to unplug completely.

TIP: Our number one tip for Klein Curacao is to bring some sunscreen. There is not much shelter on the island, and the weather is usually great. This can mean a nasty sunburn if you don’t bring enough sunscreen and perhaps shirts for snorkeling. My husband got burned for sure.

Free Walking Tour, Willamstad, Curacao

Recommended by: Sarah of In Search of Sarah

Taking a free walking tour in Curacao is one of the best things to do in Willemstad – the cruise port city for this vibrant Caribbean island! Free walking tours are a fun and memorable way to immerse yourself in Curacao’s capital with its colourful buildings, rich history, and unique architecture.

This 2.5 hour tour with Free Walking Tours Curacao requires no transportation, allowing visitors to delve into the heart of Willemstad straight away. Local guides share fascinating insights about the city’s Dutch colonial past as you stroll past iconic pastel-coloured buildings lining the waterfront.

Part of Curacao’s walking tour takes visitors across the famous Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge connecting the two sides of Willemstad, Otrobanda the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic district, Punda.

You will also get a chance to see the incredible street art, markets, museums, and a chance to interact with locals and sample the cuisine. There are endless photo opportunities along the way, so be sure to have your phone or camera handy!

By taking a free walking tour in Curacao, it gives you a better feel for where you’re visiting since you learn alot about the island’s history while you’re there. It also allows you to see some unique hidden gems you’d otherwise miss. It’s a great use of time without having to spend a dime!

Tip: While this activity is free and great to do if you only have a few hours, it’s important to remember the guides work based off tips. Consider tipping $15-$20 – trust me, it’s well-worth it!

Waterfalls Tour, Dominica

Recommended by: Lisa of Waves and Cobblestones

Are you visiting Dominica on a cruise?   The best way to see the wonders of the Nature Island of the Caribbean is by taking a waterfall tour in Dominica.

Although you could certainly rent a car and see waterfalls on your own, the roads in Dominica are very steep and winding.  So, it’s much less stressful –and more enjoyable — to have an experienced tour guide do the navigation and driving for you!

On our tour, we visited multiple gorgeous waterfalls, including Jacko Falls, Emerald Pool, and Trafalgar Falls.  Trafalgar Falls is a stunning pair of waterfalls — the taller named Papa Falls and the shorter named Mama Falls.

As you drive across the island on the tour, you’ll be amazed at the number of streams and array of lush greenery.    They say that the island has over 365 waterfalls and rivers, which is a mind-boggling number!

Our tour was a shore excursion offered by the cruise line. Several local operators offer tours visiting one or more of Dominica’s waterfalls.  They’re sometimes combined with other natural attractions such as a visit to beautiful black sand beaches or hot springs.

Pro Tip:  Be prepared with a rain poncho, hat, or umbrella.  Dominica is a rainforest, after all, so expect to get some rain during your tour.  We got rained on at each of the waterfalls we visited, but it was still worth it!

The Dominica is well known for its many waterfalls. Discover the hidden beauty of several waterfalls by booking a waterfall day tour

El Limon Waterfall, Dominican Republic

Recommended by: Kelly of Just One Passport

When visiting the beautiful Caribbean Island of Dominican Republic, an excursion to the El Limon Waterfall can’t be missed. Whether visiting a day by cruise ship or a week at an all-inclusive resort, the waterfall is an absolute must.

When taking an excursion to the base of these beautiful falls, you will have two options. You can choose to hike or mount a horse for the ride down. The hike is approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), and consists of many stairs. I chose to take a horse down which was a ton of fun. Don’t forget to wear your swimsuit and bring a towel as you will have the opportunity to cool off once you reach the falls.

Mangrove Tour, Roatan, Honduras

Recommended by: Madison of Madison’s Footsteps

Embarking on a Mangrove Tour in Roatan is undoubtedly one of the best shore excursions you can experience in the Caribbean. This unique adventure allows visitors to explore the natural wonders of the island’s mangrove forests as well as explore the rustic east end of the island that many tourists don’t get to see.

Most tours, including the one we booked, conveniently provide round-trip van transportation from West Bay or West End, since the mangroves are located far away on the east side. We packed our group into the van (which fit 14 people quite comfortably), stopped at the Petrosun gas station for snacks and beer, and headed off for an exciting day of adventure and fun in the sun.

Our tour offered an exhilarating tour of the mangroves by speed boat. Gliding through the winding waterways, we had the chance to spot diverse wildlife, such as tropical birds, and even stopped to cool off with a swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters. The day also included a stop at one of Roatan’s most iconic bars.

If you find yourself in Roatan, don’t miss the opportunity to embark on a mangrove tour and experience first-hand one of the island’s best-kept secrets.

A day tour in Honduras is the ideal way to explore the mangroves and view the wildlife when you're in Roatan.

Underwater Museum Of Art (MUSA), Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Recommended by: Isabella of Let’s Travel to Cancun

Snorkeling at the MUSA Museo Subacuatico de Arte (Underwater Museum of Art) in Isla Mujeres in Mexico is an amazing experience that blends art and marine conservation.

Established in 2009 by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, MUSA serves as an innovative platform for the creation of artificial coral reefs while showcasing incredible underwater sculptures. The museum is situated off the coast of Isla Mujeres in Mexico, making it easily accessible for snorkelers and scuba divers alike.

The collection comprises over 500 life-sized sculptures submerged at various depths, creating a surreal underwater gallery that attracts marine life and encourages coral growth, which was the purpose of this initiative.

Whether you are vacationing in Cancun or Isla Mujeres you can join a tour that takes you to this site. Even though divers have a closer sight, the snorkeling is also enjoyable since the statues are located under shallow crystal clear  water and you can see them quite clearly.

Usually, tour providers include masks and snorkels but you are invited to bring your own, for hygienic purposes.  Fins are provided as well.

The snorkeling tour to the MUSA is usually combined with other snorkeling sites around Isla Mujeres, making it a great half a day trip in the Mexican Caribbean waters.

Catamaran Sailing Tour to Icacos, Puerto Rico

Recommended by: Brittany of Two Broads Go Abroad

Puerto Rico is a beautiful destination itself – but did you know the main island isn’t the only island?

When I visited in May, I had the opportunity to do a catamaran sailing tour to Icacos with Castillo Tours -, and WOW. It was the most stunning, turquoise water I’d ever seen!

It was a great day of swimming, relaxing, and partying, and I was picked up from Hilton Caribe.

We took a 47-foot Barefoot IV Catamaran and departed from a marina near San Juan.

If you’ve ever marveled at the jewel tones in the Bahamas while flying over, that is exactly what you can expect on this day trip!

The servings of snacks and drinks (alcoholic drinks included!) were very generous. Be sure to drink plenty of water!

If you love the water, this excursion was made for you. They provide snorkeling gear, flotation devices, a packed lunch (choices of turkey or vegetarian sandwich, chips, pasta salad, fruit, and cookies), and drinks throughout the day.

Remember to bring your own towel and sunscreen, and you’re welcome to carry your own snacks and drinks, but glass containers, beer, and hard liquor are prohibited onboard.

Not that the tour company warns that this trip isn’t suitable for pregnant individuals or people with mobility issues. This is due to potential rough seas, and the nature of being on a smaller vessel.

Those with serious heart conditions or extreme motion sickness might want to reconsider (unless you have sea sickness patches with you!).

Catamaran Snorkel Excursion, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Recommended by: Brittney of A Mom Well Traveled

If you’re looking for a tropical getaway, then 3 days in Puerto Rico, San Juan is the perfect escape! While San Juan offers a variety of activities on land, visitors can’t miss taking a catamaran snorkel excursion during their stay.

Book your half day tour on the Spread Eagle II for the ultimate sailing and underwater experience. Travellers staying in San Juan can opt for a hotel pickup for an additional fee as the catamaran sets sail from Fajardo (30 miles east of San Juan). Once on board, you’ll enjoy a one-hour ride to your first snorkel stop. Your tour includes snorkel gear, snacks, and drinks, so all you need to bring is a towel and sunscreen.

The catamaran will anchor near a secluded beach where you’ll have time to snorkel or relax on the beach. After that you’ll be taken further out for even more snorkeling. Get up close and personal with reefs and sea life during your time in the water.

This tour is great for all ages and the staff keep the tour lively while also providing some history about the island. It’s a can’t miss experience when visiting San Juan, especially for those who love the ocean!

Piton Cruise, St. Lucia

Recommended by: Lauren of The Traveling Moore

On a recent Caribbean cruise, St Lucia quickly became one of my favorite islands in the Caribbean. It has beautiful white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and stunning jungle mountains. St Lucia is also where I took one of my favorite cruise excursions I’ve ever done!

I’ve cruised over a dozen times, all over the world, but I still think back on this day out as one of the best. The excursion was booked directly through Royal Caribbean and titled “Amazing Jeep and Catamaran Combo.”

This tour is an excellent way to see both the land and sea sides of the island in just one day.

We started with a jeep ride, driving through St. Lucia’s beautiful scenery. The roads were really twisty and offered some amazing views, but if you get carsick easily, you might find this part a bit tough.

The second part of the tour was more relaxed, as we hopped on a catamaran. It was really peaceful sailing along the coast and seeing everything from the water.

This tour is great for families who want to see a lot of the island in different ways. The mix of the exciting jeep adventure and the calm boat ride made this a standout part of my trip.

For great photo opportunities on the catamaran,I recommend sitting up front on the netted portion of the boat. Just watch out for splashing waves.

Sulphur Springs, St. Lucia

Recommended by: Nina of Where in the World is Nina

Exploring Sulphur Springs Park in St. Lucia is a great excursion in the Caribbean to rejuvenate! In the picturesque town of Soufrière, this natural wonder, famed as the Caribbean’s only drive-in volcano, is definitely one of the most popular things to do in St. Lucia.

The highlight of your visit will undoubtedly be the mud baths. Initially, you may be hesitant to slather yourself in mud but trust me, just do it! The mud is rich in minerals and feels like a spa treatment.

Each pool, varying in temperature, offers a different level of warmth and relaxation. It’s a bit weird at first, rubbing volcanic mud all over yourself in front of other people, but the results? Incredibly soft baby skin!

Post mud-bath, you should take a stroll around the park to see the steaming vents and bubbling pools. You’ll even peep the staff getting more buckets of mud straight from the craters and walking it over to the bathing area.

If you’re renting a car, you can pull up and soak or head out here on a tour.

Bask in the sun and mud baths found at the Caribbean's only drive-in volcanoe. This is definitely the best excursion when visiting the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia

TIP: Wear a dark bathing suit! The mud can stain, and while it’s worth the experience, it’s not worth sacrificing your favorite swimwear.

Floating Food Tour, US Virgin Islands

Recommended by: Monica of Maxed Out PTO

On your next vacation to St. John or St. Thomas make sure you consider a floating food tour. There are two unique restaurants in the United States Virgin Islands that are only accessible by boat – Lime Out (taco boat) and Pizza Pi (pizza boat). While you can visit these via shuttles at each bay, these can be a bit out of the way and hard to get to. The best way to get to these stops is via a boat tour of the island of St. John.

There are a couple of different options on the islands that will take you to these destinations but we highly recommend Stormy Pirates’ Food Boat Tour. This tour is a fantastic all day boat trip.

The trip leaves from St. Thomas and then picks up passengers on St. John, making it an easy day trip from either island. In addition to stopping at both Lime Out and Pizza Pi, it also includes multiple snorkel stops (where you will likely get to swim with sea turtles) and an open bar on the boat. Make sure you check this tour out on your next trip to St. John.
