Cruise the Coast is the perfect Ontario road trip for couples, families, and solo adventure enthusiasts. This road trip is easily accessible from Toronto and can be done during all seasons. The great thing about road trips is that they are inexpensive and won’t break the bank. In this post, I’ll tell you why Cruise the Coast is the best Ontario road trip.
Ontario’s Cruise the Coast road trip takes you to the most southerly point in Canada. Once you do this trip you will completely understand how appropriate this name is. Cruise the Coast extends 258.4 km (160.5 miles) along Lake Erie in the southern part of Ontario. It takes you through many small towns with quaint shops and family owned eats and treats, spectacular lookouts and many lighthouses. There is a never-ending opportunity for the landscape photographer to capture the best that Ontario has to offer, which is the main reason why Cruise the Coast is the best Ontario road trip.

When driving the Cruise the Coast route you will have ample opportunity to view the diversity of Ontario’s farmland as the topography forever changes from tobacco, to fruit, to wineries. There are plenty of places to stop along the way for a “quick dip” in the lake or a leisurely day at the beach, hence, remember to pack up a picnic and your beach essentials before hitting the road. Oh and you don’t want to forget your road trip essentials!

About Cruise the Coast
How Long is the Cruise the Coast Road Trip
While Cruise the Coast is popular among motorcyclists, it also makes for the perfect Ontario road trip along Lake Erie in Southern Ontario. The Cruise the Coast road trip begins at Highway 3 (also known as the King’s Highway) in Fort Erie and continues for 258.4 km (160.5 miles)to Windsor, Ontario.
This road trip will take you through many Regions of Ontario, including Niagara, Haldimand, Norfolk, Oxford, Elgin, and Essex. After spending time discovering one of the wonders of the world in Niagara Falls, or wine tasting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, head over to Fort Erie to begin your journey on this road trip. Start early in the day in order to avoid traffic.
If you only have one day, don’t panic. You don’t have to begin this road trip in Fort Erie. In fact you can access this road trip anywhere along Highway 3, and you can drive as far as you want. From where I live in Kitchener, Ontario, I access the highway in Simcoe which is about the half-way point.
There is no direct route for this particular road trip and the best way to know exactly where you are is to stay as close to the lake as possible. This is also where you will pass through many great small towns and hamlets. The entire trip (one way) takes approximately 7 hours, but I recommend taking 2 days so you are able to enjoy the scenery along the way.

What to See and Do on Cruise the Coast, Ontario’s Best Road Trip
Port Dover, Ontario
The first stop I recommend making during your Cruise the Coast road trip is Port Dover, which is well known for its fresh perch caught straight from Lake Erie and Friday the 13th. It is also a great place to take an early morning “quick dip” in the lake to freshen up.
Just One Tip: For authentic perch caught straight out of the lake, I recommend the Erie Bell Restaurant
For the cheese lover, a stop at the Dover Cheese Shop should be in order to pick up a snack for the drive.
Long Point
The nature lover definitely won’t want to miss a stop at Long Point. Here you will be able to view one of Canada’s biosphere sites right from the highway, where you will be inspired to co-exist as one with nature. Long Point Biosphere is located in Norfolk County in the heart of the Carolinian Forest. With an abundance of hiking trails, ziplines, suspension bridge, and more endangered species than anywhere in Canada, it will be difficult to leave. Just don’t forget to pack your hiking gear.
For the wine lover, this area is also home to up and coming vineyards and I highly recommend a stop at the Burning Kiln Winery. For the most spectacular views of the marshland and some amazing wine, a stop at Inasphere Winery and Market, a family owned winery, is an absolute must before departing this area.
Just One Tip: Cabbage is grown in abundance at Inasphere Winery. You will definitely want to pick one up. Oh and try the wine. It’s delicious and it’s perched high above the biosphere. The view is magical!
If you fall in love with this area of the road trip and want to stay a little bit longer, glamping is available at Long Point Eco Adventures, but must be booked well in advance. For a larger group, there is a cabin with yurts available for rent by contacting Long Point Eco Adventures.
Port Rowen, Ontario
The waterfront in Port Rowen is the perfect spot to stop for a picnic. The old-fashion boat houses will transport you to an old-time fishing village.
If you forgot to pack up a picnic, stop at the seasonal market located at the harbour, for some locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables.
Port Burwell, Ontario
Port Burwell is the perfect stop if you want to spend the day on the beach. There is plenty of space to set up the blankets and laze while watching the kiddos splash in the Lake. For the fisherman, there is also a pier which makes for the ideal spot to cast a line for a couple of hours.
There are also public restrooms, making it the ideal stop on this road trip.
Port Stanley, Ontario
Next stop, and my favourite, is Port Stanley. With all of the family owned restaurants and quaint boutiques, Port Stanley is the perfect spot to spend the night (more on accommodations later).
Port Stanley is the ideal spot for the beach lover and it is considered to be one of Ontario’s best beach towns in Ontario. There is a large beach area, with restaurants and beach shops on one side of the harbour and awesome boutiques, coffee shops, and ice-cream parlours on the other side of the harbour. No matter what side of the harbour you are on, you will be able to enjoy watching an abundance of boats coming and going.
The kiddos and old folks alike will love taking a train ride through to discover the local area on the Port Stanley Terminal Rail.
Even if you only have a day, a stop in Port Stanley is a must when on the Cruise the Coast,, Ontario’s best road trip.
Blenheim, Ontario
Blenheim is one of the largest “cities” along the Cruise the Coast route, which makes it the perfect spot to stop and stretch your legs or top up your Timmies. For the adults who are searching for a cold one, a visit to the Red Barn Brewery should be on the agenda.
Leamington, Ontario
You can’t go on one of Ontario’s best road trips without a stop at Point Pelee National Park in Leamington! It would be so easy to spend an entire day hiking one of the many trails, biking the trails and boardwalk, kayaking through the marshland, birdwatching, or just simply lazing at the beach. This is the perfect spot for the nature lover and adventure enthusiast and it can’t be missed.
Just One Tip: to find adventures and activities along the Cruise the Coast route, I recommend checking either Viator or Get Your Guide.
Kingsville, Ontario
If you are planning on taking a few days to do the Cruise the Coast road trip, then Kingsville is where I recommend you make your home base. There are so many shops, wineries, brew pubs, and beaches that you are guaranteed not to want to leave. It is also just a short drive to Leamington, making it easy to return to Point Pelee National Park.
The ferry to Pelee Island also leaves from Kingsville during certain months of the year which further entices people to make Kingsville their home away from home while road tripping along the coast of Lake Erie.

PIN THE PERFECT ONTARIO ROAD TRIP
I love all the “Port” small towns along the coastline of Ontario’s most southern tip. They are each unique and offer something different, but the one thing they do have in common is the amazing beaches and views. I want to check out Kingsville a bit more now that I have read your article.
You would LOVE Kingsville. I just wish it wasn’t quite so far so it could be a day trip
This sounds like an amazing road trip in Ontario! I can only imagine the scenery during the fall, it must be beautiful and I’d love to take a road trip like this.
Fall is the absolute best time to do this road trip!
Oh, Canada is growing on me with it’s lovely Indian summer colours and quaint towns. I agree with you, even though this stretch is doable in a day or two, I’d probably stay around for 5 days or so, so I can properly explore the area and don’t miss out on anything. The hikes near Kingsville would be of interest to me and of course the coffee! What is java? Is it a special sort of coffee or a Canadian slang word?
Carolin | Solo Travel Story
Java is Canadian slang for coffee 🙂
There’s a lot of great info in this guide to the area. I’ve been to Niagara and Niagara-on-the-lake which were fabulous, but there is so much here that I haven’t seen. With all the info on where to eat, snack, stay and see it’s a valuable guide for anyone visiting this route.
When you were in Niagara, you were in the perfect area to start this road trip! I admit, Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of my favourite road trips
Road trips are my favorite kind of traveling. Canada has been on my list for so long. This post combines it adding the “off the beaten path” factor that I really enjoy! Thanks so much for sharing
I hope you’re able to get to Canada and if you do, I highly recommend this road trip to escape the big cities
Port Stanley looks like such an idyllic stop on the road trip! The Pepper Spice Co sounds right up my alley – I love finding unique spices for cooking!
They have 100s! It’s a great spot and there are so many unique stores in Port Stanley
It always amazes me to see how huge Ontario really is and how this is just a fraction of the beautiful province. What a great looking road trip. I wouldn’t want to rush it though, and would have to make all the stops along the way. The little fishing villages, with cute shops and great food all sound fantastic
Yes, Ontario is HUGE!!!! I’ve lived here 62 years and haven’t come close to seeing all of it yet. This road trip has turned out to be my favourite, and I would recommend at least 1 week to see and do everything. Especially if you want to go to the Pelee Island.
Wow! So many amazing wineries and restaurants. Looks like an awesome road trip. The beaches along Lake Ontario would be fun too
So much to see and do on this road trip.
This guide is awesome, I love how you have things to do, and where to stay and eat! I’ve only been to Toronto and the Niagara Falls area but the whole region looks so beautiful.
It’s the perfect area to get away from the cities
I didn’t know about this but this looks like such a charming road trip! Banded Goose Brewing sounds right up my alley.
I loved the Banded Goose. Such a great place with great food and even better beer
What a charming area. I always love to see the cool sights, restaurants and places to stay to start visualizing my plans.
It’s a great area to explore with a ton of beaches and small towns
I haven’t had a chance to visit Ontario. Thanks to you, if I make it to Ontario, I now know all the best places to stop and places to eat!
hopefully one day you will get here, and if you do you absolutely HAVE to do this road trip!
Love this itinerary. We have done a little self-drive in Ontario but not along the coast and it really appeals. I love your suggested places to visit, especially Long Point for nature and the biosphere, and Blenheim for the city vibe. And I really like the sound of Kingsville.
Long Point and Kingsville are my favorite Ontario destinations (so far). In 62 years, I still haven’t seen near all of it
I actually have a really good friend who’s from Ontario and just moved back last week. This is good information to know when I head up to visit her! I would love a road trip!
I love this roadtrip. It’s my favorite
I haven’t been to Ontario yet, but it’s on my list, as I love Canada, and I’m going back there soon. I would love to use your itinerary as it is very detailed and contains many valuable tips. You also show exciting places and attractions that I have not heard about before.
This part of Ontario has quickly become my favorite. So much to do!
One of my best friends is from Ontario. I haven’t yet visited, but this is a great guide to use because it has everything from where to stay and eat and things to see and do.
I hope you are able to visit one day. There are so many beautiful things to see
This looks like my kind of road trip. We’ve driven in Ontario and Quebec on a previous visit to Canada and loved th experience but we’ve not driven the Ontario coast road. Attractions such as the Long Point biosphere and birdwatching at Leamington appeal and you’ve identified some wonderful places to eat and stay.
If you get back to Ontario long Point is a must! It’s my favorite area in Ontario.
