Are you looking for an Ontario weekend getaway on your own? Look no further than Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario, Canada! Despite being known as a tech hub and university town, Kitchener-Waterloo is a vibrant and charming region with plenty to offer solo travelers. From exploring the outdoors to discovering unique culinary experiences, here’s how to spend a solo weekend in Kitchener.

For your perfect solo weekend in Kitchener-Waterloo, I have put together the ideal two day itinerary which will satisfy the shopaholic, foodie, history buff, and nature lover. I live in Kitchener, so take it from a local, these are some of the best things to see and do during your solo weekend away.

A Solo 2 Day Getaway to Kitchener-Waterloo

I recommend arriving to the Waterloo Region the night before, so that you can hit the road running bright and early on your first day in the Waterloo Region.

Day 1 in Kitchener-Waterloo:

Begin your day by grabbing the perfect cup of coffee from one of Waterloo Regions many amazing coffee shops. Lounge in the cafe and catch up on some reading, or order a cup of java to go if you’re anxious to begin exploring Kitchener-Waterloo. The decision is totally up to you. Afterall, you’re travelling alone, you can do what you want, when you want 🙂 .

Take a Stroll or Hike in Waterloo Region

Next take a stroll through Victoria Park, located in downtown Kitchener. This 59-acre park is the perfect spot to relax and take in the beauty of nature. Relax with your cup of coffee while sitting on a bench beside the park’s serene lake.

Hike the trails at Huron Natural Area, a hidden gem found in the middle of Kitchener, Ontario and a favourite of the locals.

If you’re more inclined to fit in a more rigorous workout during your time away, the Region of Waterloo offers many hiking/walking trails, that are perfect for visitors of all fitness levels.

Just One Tip: My favourite trail is a hidden gem which is popular amoung the locals. It’s located within the City of Kitchener making it easy to get to. Huron Natural Area is the perfect spot for bird watching, and offers several different hiking/walking trails. You can easily spend two hours wandering this hidden gem.

Visit the Mennonite Town of St. Jacobs

Next, head to the small Mennonite Village of St. Jacobs. St. Jacobs is the perfect destination for those who love to shop, while getting a glimpse of the Mennonite culture.

Experience the Mennonite Culture when visiting St. Jacobs, during a 2 day visit to Kitchener-Waterloo

In St. Jacobs, you can easily spend an entire morning or afternoon wandering through Canada’s largest Farmer’s Market. For travellers who aren’t into shopping, can take a scenic vintage train ride with Waterloo Central Railway, or board a hot air balloon and explore Kitchener-Waterloo from above with Sundance Balloons.

Thrill seekers will want to reserve a spot on a hot air balloon ride when visiting the city of Kitchener

You could easily spend a weekend exploring everything that St. Jacobs has to offer, however, Kitchener-Waterloo has much more for the solo traveller to experience.

Dine at the Lancaster Smokehouse

In the afternoon head back into Kitchener to grab a bite to eat at the Lancaster Smokehouse, famous for mouth-watering barbecue. Try their signature smoked beef brisket, which is slow-cooked over a wood fire and paired with classic southern sides.

An Evening in Kitchener Solo

One of the many complaints of solo travellers is that evenings tend to be boring, however, that’s not the case in Kitchener-Waterloo. In Kitchener-Waterloo, the solo traveller will have many night-time options to choose from:

The theatre goer will want to spend an evening at the Centre in the Square for a live theatre performance.

Live Theatre

Theatre goer’s have the option of attending a live performance at the Centre In The Square, or The Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre.

For Sports Lovers

Sports lovers will also have their pick of sporting events and/or activities. If visiting Kitchener-Waterloo during the Winter months, cheer on the Kitchener Rangers or ski the slopes at Chicopee. During the Summer months, baseball lovers can get their thrills with the Kitchener Panthers.

Sports lovers can take in an exciting hockey when visiting Kitchener, and cheer on the Kitchener Rangers.

Just One Tip: The pizza at Wineology Bar & Restaurant is to die for 🙂 . It’s a must order!

The Early Bird

If you opt for a quiet evening “at home” after your day of exploring Kitchener-Waterloo, reading is always a great option. Kitchener is home to a well-stocked library which allows you a couple of hours searching for the perfect book to read.

Just One Tip: When visiting downtown Kitchener, avid readers will want to visit A Second Look, a used book store located in downtown Kitchener, at 31 King Street West, Kitchener, Ontario

Day 2 of a Solo Getaway to the Waterloo Region:

There is no better way to start the day than by sipping on a steaming hot cup of coffee. Visit a different coffee shop in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region.

Just One Tip: I highly recommend breakfast and coffee at The Crushed Almond Bakery, which you can find just out of downtown Kitchener at 269 Frederick St, Kitchener, ON N2H 2N2

After getting an energy fix for the day, wander another one of the many trails scattered throughout the Waterloo Region.

Doon Heritage Village

In lieu of hiking one of the many hike trails, you might like to take a stroll back in time by visiting Doon Heritage Village.

NOTE: The historic buildings are closed during 2023 and 2024 for restoration. They will re-open again in 2025.

Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum

For art and history enthusiasts, I recommend making time during your visit to Kitchener-Waterloo to visit the largest community museum in Ontario. The Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum boasts a large gallery featuring local and travelling exhibits from around the world. You will find the War Museum on the second floor with a list of soldiers from the Waterloo Region who have sacrificed their lives.
